School Anxiety Teenager

Hi, we were made aware of our daughters anxiety while in school last year. We have seen a Nurse Practioner and last term she was on a reduced timetable. New term New Yeaar 11 final year and it is not going well. 3 days in and daughter is sevrely anious, gets up late, gets in car but doesnt talk and then very emotional and i have to firce her to walk in school which makes me feel awful. I am so worried she will not get through her exams. School see more interested in the new Y6 SENS children and have left our daughter to 'get on' with it. We mentioned an EHCP last term but school basically said it takes to long to get. We really done know how to help our daugher, she wont walk into a classroom unless a support teacher is in there and that is not always the case.

Apply for an ehcp yourself. Have a look at the ipsea website there is a wealth of information on this subject there.

totally understand as my daughter age 12 is the same. I don’t feel school supports her and I just don’t know what else to do. She’s not even getting up this morning and I can’t physically force her out of bed, which she knows. This is making me so anxious every day.

Hi how have things been since you posted? Has your daughter found anyways to settle at all? Have you managed to speak to the senco or anyone? You can apply for an EHCP yourself and there is a lot of information you can find on this at the Norfolk Local offer norfolk.gov.uk/article/4067... . In the meantime it doesn’t make things easier for you and if you can speak to someone at school that can really help. I don’t know if you have found any resources around the anxiety but I’ve got help through young minds in the past and I even managed to speak to an advisor.youngminds.org.uk

I don’t want to bombard you with loads of links but I know just one Norfolk have some helpful information and nsft also run online workshops. It may help if you have a look on there. I hope you are doing ok. This first few weeks in term are tough especially when things are not straightforward. Big good luck xx

hello thank you for your reply. We have costed the GP again and it’s just a waiting game for help through the mental health team. This will be complicated as daughter turns 16 in a few weeks so the referral process will need to start all over again with adult mental health team when we haven’t even heard back from the child team yet😞 not happy with school they said last term to hold on a bit before going down the route but I feel this was poor advice, we need one now! Do you have any idea how long this takes as final GCSE exams are only months away and daughter is really struggling without in class support.

Hi that’s good you spoke to the Gp, but how frustrating about the age issue and referral process. It’s never straight forward is it? I can’t tell you how long it will take but there are specific time frames when things should be done by. So they make decisions whether to assess and then it goes from there. I think in terms of exams even without an EHCP you can get access arrangements put in place. I think those are separate to say an EHCP and schools tend to have specific arrangements in place on how they do this. Is there anyone at school who you’ve found more helpful as sometimes I found it helped to speak to say the class teacher or ta. Even without a EHCP there is loads of support you can get under Sen school support. I think this is often what schools do first to try and see what is helpful. All of this then builds a picture for a EHCP assessment if it is necessary. This info is also in the local offer norfolk.gov.uk/article/4053... ( sorry more links). I hope you hear soon from the different services. I had a Quick Look on just one Norfolk and I found that there is some info there on other support that might be able to help justonenorfolk.nhs.uk/emoti...

Try and remember you are trying so many things to resolve this and even if things don’t happen quickly you are working towards resolving it. From my experience I found the process tricky and it added a lot of pressure to me so try and take some time for you too to be extra kind to yourself. I know it’s easy to say and so so hard to do but look after you too. keep going and let us know how you get on. Xx
