I have a hiatus hernia and a diverticulum midway down my oesophagus. My diverticulum causes daily discomfort, sometimes a jagging pain, or a burning sensation. I am worried that the diverticulum might rupture; if that were to happen would it be something that I would be able to identify straight away e.g. severe pain?
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,
Romeo

After experiencing this including limited eating of certain foods and pain I didn’t let it get that far . I pushed for surgery . I had to wait for a Nissan treatment which was day surgery , liquid blended diet for a month and weaning onto solids as you have to do this to the book for it to be successful then an NHS Paris guided exercise programme . I kept phoning the hospital for cancellations once I was on surgery list . To get on it was sheer endurance from several camera investigations to a tube being fed manually whilst awake - not sedation to my stomach through my nostril then a box monitor given for me to take home for 24 hrs . I felt that domestic pets are treated more respectfully.
As for the pain - we have different thresholds but if you start to feel any differently- you know you then don’t wait 3 hours for an ambulance or get coaxed to attend drop in . Get in a taxi - or get a lift / don’t drive to A and E . I would ride through any false alarm as have it put on your records then go and see GP to convey your concerns. This can take over your life as I know .
Moving forward from Jan 2018 after surgery I am a different person . Confident to get a new full time job then approaching 60 and still in 2024 maintaining a decent weight loss . Please - you are one of many but you are still important and deserve a better quality of life / future . Wishing you all the best . I used to be like you and found it hard to cope .
Thank you for taking the time to reply and I’m sorry you had to endure that experience. What was your underlying issue? Was it a hiatus hernia or diverticulum? Apologies if you mention that in your post, I might have overlooked it. Thank you
It was hiatus hernia . Afterwards the surgeon said I am pleased you went ahead with the surgery as it can be problematic if not addressed , leading to other issues. He apologised for the delay . It was his opinion that other internal organs could face damage if the hiatus hernia was not addressed. Unsure whether this was me specifically or a general concern. 3 years later I developed severe kidney stones and ended up with gall bladder removal after the kidney stones were discovered and removed . Hard to say whether the delay linked to this as otherwise I am very very healthy with a good diet and long term regular exercise with most of my working life doing manual tasks.
Sheer persistence which isn’t easy when you feel lousy both physically and psychologically but being pro active really boosted my mood. Kept being sent for tests but this reassured me that my case wasn’t being ignored . Let us all know how you get on with all . I was prescribed lanzoprazole but the surgeon agreed that this medication isn’t advisable long term.
Thank you. I’ve been offered a meeting with my consultant in 4-6 weeks. Hopefully that will shed some more light on the situation. I will keep you posted. Thanks again for replying
