Oesophageal spasms

I had surgery 5 weeks ago for HH repair and GERD. Been eating the sloppy food diet and seem to be recovering quite well. This past week I have been having the spasms about an hour after eating and they are lasting longer and getting more painful. I've been drinking peppermint tea but it doesn't help. Any ideas what might ease the pain until I speak to my surgeon in May? I'm trying to help myself as much as possible during the Coronavirus crisis but may need to call him if I can't ease the pain. Thanks to all who offer advice on here, it's helped previously and hope someone can help again.

Morning sorry to hear this it can get very painful non-cardiac pain I’ve had this for a few years I had a Botox injections last year it eased it a bit but there’s not a great deal you can do about the pain and there’s not a lot of things that can get rid of the pain in fact there’s nothing that gets rid of the pain also suggested you eat smaller bits over a longer period of the day many times that seems to help I hope it helps for you anyway

Thankyou for your reply Stephend. It was very uncomfortable last night and still hurting this morning. Also getting pains in my right shoulder and upper back so think I may call the doctor. I haven't eaten anything since about 5PM yesterday so food might not be the trigger. Thanks again for your advice.

You are right it’s not food it’s the pressure difference between your oesophagus and stomach I suffer with a spastic Jack, hammer and I get constant pain and I only biscuits that’s basically the only thing that goes down nice stays down and cuts down the pain really cuts down the pain but I am on 80 mg of omperzole a day I know how much the pain hurts it’s the same pain you get if you have a heart attack all told I’ve had 12 Botox injection into the muscle above the stomach and just below the oesophagus they have told me in the end when the Botox doesn’t work they will go into my abdomen and cut the rings at the bottom of the muscle to relax it because as it closes it closes with such force the pressure is horrendous good luck

I hope you feel well again in the not too distant future. Take care and stay safe.

To be honest it’s never going to get better but you learn to live with it and you get used to it they worry about my weight more than what I worry about my weight put it that way so you take care stay safe

I had HH and GERD repair last summer. It seemed to be going well but I started to have trouble eating. About 3 months post op, it got worse and I was throwing up all the time. My surgeon kept doing dilations but they did not help. Eventually I was referred to another doc and he said since I had had the Nissen fund, he would have to look at that first. It did turn out that the wrap was too tight and food would not go into my stomach, so it came back the other way. I learned to stay on very soft food and liquids and stayed alive till I had surgery to reverse the Nissen fund. Now I have acid again, but I can eat. ????? All of that for nothing.

I was advised to drink peppermint tea to ease the pain as I left the hospital. It didn't help but I thought it would do no harm to try it again. Still doesn't help so I've stopped drinking it.

I had surgery in 2018 . I didn't rush the diet . I had liquid food via Nutrabullet for 5 weeks . Maybe try liquids not any sloppy food .

Would mention it to a medical prof when you can if it doesn't ease . Maybe keep food diary .
