Pharyngeal Pouch

I’m going to have surgery on my throat to help with my swallowing but have been told there is a 1 in 300 risk of complications. I would be interested to hear from anyone who has had the surgery to understand their experience and how it improved their swallowing.

Hi,

Good evening. Do you know if you getting staple or the cut and fix repair?

In either of the surgeries this will be pretty standard surgery with standard risk of surgical complications.

If someone with the similar experience replies it will be great.

The diverticulam must been affecting your quality of life and hence surgery. The recovery will be gradual/progressive feeding tube/liquids to solids etc Given the nature of the wound inside for it to heal.

Hope you do not worry too much of the risk statistics. Good luck.,

Hi , I had that op 3yrs ago. They stapled it all went well, went in the afternoon came out of hospital next moring. No after effects. It made my swallowing much better. the Doctor told me that it may happen again. Now after 3yrs I find toast more dificult to swallow and some other dryier foods. But overall its much better than it was. I was only kept in oover night due previous operation and age. good luck with your op

What is a pharyngeal pouch? Did this happen post esophagectomy?

No - it is a weakness in the wall of the Oesophagus that creates a pocket in which food gets trapped and makes swallowing difficult.

I’m not sure but I think they call it Zenker?
