I was diagnosed with a hiatus hernia in 2009. Had another endoscopy in 2015 and they said it wasnt there and then in 2019 at another hospital i had another endoscopy and lo and behold the hiatus hernia showed as clear as day alongside GERD. Sometimes if they arent big they aren't easily seen,

Puzzled by this so I would request another endoscope if symptoms are still worrying you . I am no medic but mine didn't go away . I had to fight for surgery . I had endoscopes , tubes fed down my nose for 24 hour test with monitor - maybe you could ask for this ? Not pleasant but can show up other concrete signs of something wrong . This illness is awful . It affected me physically and mentally . I had surgery Jan 2018 , lost 18kg with a healthier diet/exercise . I feel like a new person .

Hi, I have been diagnosed with small sliding hernia beginning of this month, july21.Before I had the endoscopy, I had acid reflux but never this pain in upper belly and the same place on my back. It’s awful. I can’t eat anything because I always feel this epigastric pain and fullness. I don’t understand why this stomach, back and ribs pain that just started few days after the endoscope. I am so depressed and feel like trapped not knowing what to do. I have been on anti acide tablets for a long long time and apparently the treatment for this hiatus hernia is also anti acid tablets only.

Do you mind me asking you what surgery did you have and what are it’s side effects or risks. Thank you.

hi , when i had my gastroscopy the surgeon said i had no hernia and there has been confusion between UGI surgery and gastroenterology as to who was treating me , but yesterday i emailed that i would put in a formal complaint within an hour i had a call from hospital with a date for consult and who with(result) . so i do not think i will be offered surgery just yet although I still suffer with reflux at least twice aweek and swallowing problems 2-3 times a week , I was on 20mg Omeprazole this was increased to 40mg and now I am on 80mg per daythis does help as I was having reflux everyother day. As for surgery they will or should offer medication and tell you the correct time to take, I was originally told to take omeprazole before meals but then my second consultant told me to take with the food and I found it did improve things. surgery will always be a last resort but you may need to badger them for it, as i understand it is quick keyhole and a couple of stiches , gets rid of the reflux but not abdominal pain. I have had abdominal pain since 2018 and nothing has been found yet, on 8x paracetamol,(nefopam finished) and just been taken off morphine now using a pain patch (to early for results). you do need to keep on with your GP and hospitals as they do things at a snails pace. good luck for the future. kevin

I had Nissan op which for me was 5 hours day surgery - home late evening. On liquid diet for a month then soft foods . If you are carefuland for me kept to the foods you are allowed strictly and if you are deemed overweight then this will be a trigger as it was for me to change the foods I ate and drunk for life . I maintain a 18kg weight loss , exercising regularly as this to work means being pretty disciplined but for me it has enhanced my life . Risks are no different than any other op . Listen to your surgeon in the do’s and don’t s and it will be worth it

I endured so much but you really have to push and not give up as they really tried to steer me away from surgery but nothing worked until I had it
