Hello all,

I’m doing quite well post surgery but have been sick with pasta and cherry tomatoes that I think was the skins. I felt so rough the day after and my ribs were killing me. I just start coughing and I’m sick then it lasts for what feels like ages. I’m not sick until hours after I’ve eaten, 6-8 hours. I feel nauseous for a while after and very weak. Last night I ate some chocolate sponge and was sick almost immediately. Does dumping happen so long after you’ve eaten? I’m still learning. Thank you all.. I would be lost without this group xxxx

In my experience dumping can happen quickly or a few hours later. The two occasions I had a severe case of it were both a few hours later. I think it’s known as slow dumping. Hope this helps. Best Wishes, James.

Thanks ccfc, yes I’ve only has one severe bout up to now I always thought it would happen quickly or within a few hours.. mine was 8 hours later. I’ve been good since. It’s like learning to eat again every day

My husband , almost 2 years post op, still suffers with nausea and dumping . It’s important to keep the half hour gap of not drinking anything before or after meals. He takes a buccal ( slow dissolving tablet placed between gum & upper lip) for the nausea . It’s also a case of tiny meals , it’s trial & error knowing what you can cope with. Bread, cakes & chocolate were intolerable to start with, now small amounts ok, but still not bread☹️. It’s miserable when this happens, but in time things will settle. At the advice of specialist nurse after bad dumping take loperamide ( Imodium) . My husband takes probably once a day. But check with your team. Deflatine helps with wind. It can take quite a while for things to settle after the major plumbing, but you will get there! Good luck

Thank you and I hope your husband is doing well on the whole... it’s great to hear from you and your experience. I often feel for my husband and wonder if he’s doing ok supporting me through this.. he would do anything for me. Thank you to you and all our husbands, wives and partners we would be lost without you. Xxx

Hi If you put dumping in the search bar you will find an amazing amount of info from lots of us, it can be early or late and is caused by lots of different foods for different people. you can feel and be sick, feel weak, clammy, shattered and confused, sleepy and often look absolutley grey. an intake of sugar normally helps, either dextrose tablets, boiled sweets, dolly mixtures, a bananna, lucozade, orange juice, cola, or similar as long as its not a reduced or sugar free version. Whatever you find works best for you. I swallow at least half a pack of dextrose tablets to get me feeling normal again.

Portion size is also a cause of pain and discomfort as the gut is learning how to cope and works on gravity so moving around can result in food in the gut at the wrong stage in the wrong place. The vagas nerve has been cut and its learning to deal with food all over again. it does get better but its a bit like a baby, liquids, soft foods, and then tiny portions of everything and see how it copes. If you can remember to chew it well but it is so easy to forget to chew properly as it is something we don't really think about. I have munched my way through chips and mayonaise and regretted afterwards not having chewed them better.

looks like you are doing well take care

Hi Liz, thank you so much for your advice... I think I will be buying dextrose tablets. It really is like learning to eat all over again. I never used to snack abs my problem is I forget, I don’t feel hungry ever then I’m grey and feel awful. I seem to be tolerating most foods really well with the exception of tomatoes and pasta :) sue

Hi yes early dumping and late dumping. All skins tomatoes, grapes oranges are harder for the body to digest and can regurgitate later on. It is trial and error. Dextrose tablets, banana or digestives are good to keep handy for when you have an attack. Everything takes time to settle down.

Best Wishes

Debbie

Ah thank you Debbie.. I think I will avoid anything with skin for a while. Tomatoes were my first apart from potato skin that was fine. You don’t realise how plastic they feel in texture. Dextrose tablets are on my shopping list although I do carry chocolate with me all the time now too. Thanks for taking the time to reply. I really appreciate it. Sue
