Hi I have recently had Endoscopy and results came back as Erosive Gastritis and Refulx. I am on 40mg of Lansoperzole and Gavinscon. But I am in extreme pain in my left upper abdomen. Is there anything I can for the pain ?

Many thanks xx

Hello and welcome to the forum.

The pain location could be superficial, having said that its the stomach tissue which is burning, or the oesophageal tissue which is burning due to acid exposure.

as the diagnosis says erosive gastritis, its obvious that the protective layer internal to the stomach is affected and is having intense pain due to acid burn.

prezole is an acid suppressant medication best taken early mornign and in the evening. this has its own issues. for the time being healing the inflammation is primary objective.

Gaviscon advance is liquid algenate which is great to give a good layer within the oesophagus, however due to stomach's physicality its going to be difficult for gaviscon advance liqid to go to the stomach tissue and cover it up. Hope you understand.

cold milk is a great help, so is cold water. milk will reduce the pain.

there is plenty lifestyle advice on the opa.org.uk for acid reflux management, please have agood read there for more detailed information.

avoiding passive and active smoking, alcohol, acid invoking foods, liquids, such as fizzy, carbonated drinks etc.

lying elevated in the bed. most importantly keepign your mind blissful is very important for the GI muscles to relax and work normally. any undue stress anxiety is going to make the situation more worse.

Also avoid ibuprufen and similar medications for pain (NSAIDS - non steroidal anti inflammatory drugs), these medicines will exacerbate the issues for your gastritis.

in the longer term you will have to figure out how are you going to change you day to day lifestyle to manage the conditions and later work towards reflux resolution. also great dela of information on the OPA website and offcourse patient experience on this forum.

welcome Karen. also please feel free to use the search function on the top right of your webpage to find previous posts using the keywords.

The issue is in the stomach and is a tricky balance to find between giving the inflammed tissue a break from the acid activity to heal and continuing regular nutritional activity. the successful outcome is achieved by most patients by informing themselves of the symptoms and their management on longer term.

Please note that if the pain persists and you continue losing weight significantly during the treatment, you may require immediate hospital attention.
