Terrible coughing fit

Hi all. My partner is struggling to sleep well because of night time coughing fit due to the acid bile coming up and blocking and restricting his airways. What we can do and does it often happens after the op ? He is trying all the dietary regime really not eating late and small portions. Any advice would be appreciate it and very grateful to you all supporting and sharing your experience

He needs to not lie flat. If possible, invest in an adjustable bed. I never lie flat post ectomy, and I use gaviscon every night. Sometimes if reflux is bad I need to sleep almost sitting up. This is unfortunately normal after this surgery, but you can reduce the reflux by adjusting the bed and never lie flat.

what cortex1 said. thumbs up.

also change the posture from bed to upright ish sofa or comfy chair for that time.

add more gap between the last meal and sleeping time.

Also try crispy ish toast, one or two. or simply the pop corn when these episodes happen. this will soak up the fluid and stop it from travelling further up. I do this occasionally.

he is still early days, and this is very very normal to have coughing episodes, (unless you see blood or choking get A&E).

The need to lie with the head raised has been well explained and is vital. 15 years on I very occasionally experience reflux and I have established that, in my case, it is bile and very unpleasant. I have found some relief from drinking lime and soda (Tesco) with the acid content counteracting the alkali of bile. At least it helps to some degree. I would add that, if the coughing persists during the day it will very much decline over time.

Hi. 4.5 yrs on and I sleep propped up with pillows every night. Can't lie on right side at all, take lansoprazole 40mg every day. Never eat 3 hrs before bed then gaviscon advance as I get into bed. Still get an odd night when acid that bad that it makes me sick, throat and ears feel like they are on fire. Then a couple of days with persistent cough and wheeze. But if I don't follow this routine it would be every night.

I found that reading the posts here and trying different ideas was the best way to find what worked for me. There is no right or wrong as what works for one won't work for another.

Keep your chin up you will find the right mix for you with time.
