Hello all, I’m 2 1/2 years post Ivor Lewis and take 15 mg Lanzoprazole in the morning, and Gaviscon at bed time. I never suffer from reflux or heartburn through the day, but despite eating nothing after about 7.30pm, I start to get a dreadful cough a couple of hours later. Gaviscon is good at stopping it though it often wakens me. Does anybody me else have this problem and how do you deal with it?
Thank you.

hi I am 12 years post op and the cough at night is the first sign of what is about to happen , like you I take gaviscon at bed time the chewables and also don’t eat before 7 but it can still happen the dreaded acid reflux 🤢 sick , I was told mine is because the joint is high and the removal of certain valves but I also heard from other people it’s the same for them even if the joint is lower towards the stomach
Hi and thank you for your reply. It does seem to be quite common, though it never goes into actual reflux with me. My tumour was lower, at the stomach junction and the surgeon just said it was “to be expected “ or something similar. So annoying though!
Hi, I'm 17 years post-op and I still sometimes get a mild but irritating cough during the night. I take 20mg pantoprazole after my evening meal and gaviscon at bedtime and sleep slightly propped up. I've had numerous tests done and seen various doctors, including a respiratory consultant, and they all agree that it is a gastric cough caused by silent reflux (LPR). They think it may also be caused by eosinophilia (i.e. an elevated level of eosinophils in the blood), which may in turn have been caused by the original cancer, or the treatment. Either way, there's nothing they can do about it. I was advised that, if it got bad, to temporarily double my dose of pantoprazole.
Thank you for your reply. Fabulous to hear you’re 17 years free! Yes I agree with what you’re saying , it does seem connected with heartburn. Last night was very annoying then some nights it doesn’t bother me much. Maybe drinking water too late in the evening isn’t a good idea? One doctor said I should have no liquids as well as food after 7pm.
Interesting! I rarely eat my evening meal before 7.30pm and always have a cup of peppermint tea before bed. However, drinking water in the evening is never good for me (but wine is fine 🙂).
Well I am now jealous of the wine drinkers! Ever since my Ivor Lewis op 61/2 years ago wine just doesn't taste nice. The other thing is black coffee. As to the cough at night I have concluded its just one of the things we put up with. I, not convinced anything I do or don't do affects it, it just happens sometimes.
Thanks for your reply! Yes I do find some things happen randomly , like sugar dips, when other days I’m fine for no apparent reason. I still have taste issues, with some things I used to enjoy now being repulsive! Don’t know if that’s the op or the chemo, but it’s definitely a “thing “.
Interesting. I struggled to eat much at all during the pre-op chemo, and went off lots of things. Post op it’s been a slow process getting back to eating, and eating enough.
