I've never heard of this - but sounds like a great idea.

Someone dear to me just went through major surgery as emergency. I would have preferred to know more about the operation & had the opportunity to ask informed questions beforehand. I would have preferred for them to have gotten as well as possible before the surgery.

Hope you find the 2 hour session really helpful and reassuring and get the opportunity to ask questions if you wish.

All the best for tomorrow.

xx

God Bless

Thank you for your reply we also thank its good because we have a few questions we hope they can answer we was just hoping that someone would have already had this and could tell us more about it

Thinking about it a bit more . . . .

I guess the fact that it's held by an Anaesthetist and Physiotherapist it's going to be more about their roles in your care rather than go into any detail about the specific surgery ?

But I'd prepare a list of questions anyway.

Well first of all best wishes for tomorrow

In central Scotland we don’t have this but we do have several “PRE OP “ appointments

The first is with nurses which includes height/weight/blood pressure/ blood tests/ ECG

Then later at an Anaestetist who goes thu all your general health and life style then a physical fitness test including a bicycle whilst monitoring heart lungs

Then to physio who had my husband walking up and down a marked distance for around 10

mins to judge physical fitness

Then we were at the Specialist unit who were going to operate to have most of the above plus given a little machine to blow into to strengthen lungs and a strong antibacterial mouthwash to use up until op day

Lots of advice on what to expect

Don’t know if this helps but wish you both well on your journey

Thank you for your advice he has had a pre op with all of the above you mentioned so maybe this is to talk about how to build himself up in preparing for the operation nobody's over hear that we have spoken to has had this done when having a mager op so it will be interesting to see what it is about

Hi

Normally called a pre OP assessment but now with added school to help fitness and diet for treatment and recovery.

New NHS incentive to help patients.

I had a lot of breathing exercises to do before the op to increase my lung capacity and others to increase my general fitness level before the op. Also I was told what would happen after the op and why they would drag me out of bed and round the HDU with an entourage of people carrying my drips and drains etc. God bless them, he was right I was not at all amused and hated the sight of him at the time.

Hi I had a pre op check before my surgery. Very much the same as the other answers

It is great that they prepare you so much for surgery. Get as fit as possible it will help you. Good luck.

When my husband had his IL op 8 years ago we found the pre-op "tutorial" very helpful. Knowledge is power! We had an idea of what the op would do, what would happen afterwards. Of course it was scary but we were scared already. (He made a stunning recovery, thanks to terrific support at every stage.)

Good luck!

I would imagine that they would be covering any pre op orders such as diet, nutrition, what to expect length or surgery, possible complications pain, nausea, etc from surgery post surgery instructions such as pain control, not heavy lifting for X amount of weeks, diet any special instructions, activities tolerance, how many incisions, incision care etc. My husband and I just went for his pre op education what to expect pre op, operative and post op care last week.
