Pancreatitis

Hi my husband is over four months post Ivor Lewis and was in hospital for six weeks.

He was admitted a few weeks ago due to extreme weight loss for either feeding tube and/ or CT scan

Scan showed Acute on Chronic Pancreatitis and apparently it would not have mattered what diet he had he was not being nourishedas his enzymes weren’t being produced

Now home on enzymes in capsule form and he has gone between severe constipation to diaorrhea

So once again we are juggling with his diet to learn what is acceptable to his body

Does anybody else have any experience of this ? Any help appreciated

Thank you

I am 14 months post I.L. and have been in the 'cow pat' condition for most of it, (I have however been putting on weight) I have started on Creon enzymes, but at the moment it seems to make it worse with one 25000 every meal time and one 10000 with snacks, I don't think it is the food I have been eating, I have a very varied diet, and it is the same no matter what I eat, so, I am now going to try cutting these down to the 10000 each meal with none if I snack, only the first day of trying this, so far so good but it's worth a try..........is it the food or the dose of enzyme ?

Honestly don't know if this is of help Fizzy we all seem to have to try things out.

Thank you that was very helpful.

He is on 25000 at 2 a meal and 10000 at 2 a snack so I feel for your problem.

A problem is define snack ? Because obviously he is on small plates and we do not comply to the 3 meals 2 snacks a day regime.

More several snacky types of food except for breakfast so yes indeed is it the food or the enzymes ?

Jeff I wish you well and hope you feel better soon when you can manage your way around the perpetual maze !

Best wishes

Hi,

It's a learning process with trial and error suited to each individual.

Watch out for gluten, lactose, sugar intolerance post Oesophagectomy.

Excess quantity, overindulgence, walking/talking(physical activity straining the stomack/bowels through diaphragm) etc immediately after meals can trigger bowel dumping too.

If you can keep a diary you can figure out which foods are causing dumping. And then remove those from meals and continue.

Secondly take the creon staggered through out the meal with orange or lime juice, water with citric acid helps break down the enzymes. Meaning if your meals has 30 spoons, take first creon after 10 spoons and then second at 20th spoon. If you eat steak then take first when starting to eat and add an extra creon for extra help. Remember the enzymes have to go beforehand or at the beginning of the food stacking up in stomach, not like eating tablets after finishing eating which we generally do.

During meal, immediately before and after, for 30 min avoid drinking water. Having said that ensure body is sufficiently hydrated due to ongoing dumping. Only take sips for creon during meals.

I have found what works best for me as I work, live away from home in a different country, and manage all routine myself. It's a new day everyday and I am enjoying the getting along.

You will have to tweak these parameters yourself for best outcome to your expectations.
