I am a 44 years old female. I have had severe heartburn for the last 4 months and occasional nausea, that I attributed to GERD. I underwent gastroscopy that showed mild gastritis and esophagitis. I also have Candida in my bowel. I took esomeprazole for GERD at first, but it caused me psychological imbalance, even panic atracks, so I tried all the prazoles and finally switched to omeprazole 10mg in the morning. It gave me mild nausea and anorexia, but I thought that I could handle these better than the other side effects. The thing is that my heartburn is almost non existent now, but the nausea, dyspepsia and loss of appetite is permanent, it's especially severe in the morning to the point I can't function at all. I feel constantly sick. I stopped taking omeprazole 10 days ago, but the nausea is persistent. Doctors told me it's psychological and I started taking antidepressants, but I am not sure that's the case. I am loosing weight and I am already skinny, so I am quite desperate to find a solution. Thank you so much for any suggestions.

Maybe timing of your morning and evening medication is at fault. I had some nausea but now always take the tablets after food and in the morning have a good portion if fibre which reduces reflux and aids digestion.
That's a good point, but I hadn't been taking any meds for 10 days and still was nauseous. It's as if omeprazole left me with permanent nausea and indigestion. And I can't digest fibers easily, every meal is a struggle for me actually.
Take the focus from food .Eat what you can and try a gentle swim or yoga .Something to take your mind off the problems you have .I was the opposite .I had hiatus hernia and now post surgery I had to shed weight .Keeping busy with sport , learning Spanish and the odd walk with a group and I wasn't alone .Some had issues that made me almost silent and some welcomed my company .Sport isn't all about shedding weight .I felt lonely although I have family but now know plenty of people just to casually chat to about anything.
It’s difficult not to think about these problems, when all I feel is pain and nausea all day long. Thank you for your advice, though. As soon as I feel better I will socialize more.
I feel that getting out and about was my route to getting better .You don't have to be social if you swim or join any class but I had 2 months off work and was crawling the walls
Yes, I am. But there is some development. I did some blood tests again and I have elevated liver enzymes and urine amylase. I did an abdominal ultrasound (the 4th one) and it showed sludge in my gallbladder. MRI of the abdomen talks about possible mild pancreatitis. I will have my gallbladder removed and I really hope that I will wake up without nausea after the surgery. Am I too optimistic?
My story is a little the same. I had some ulcers, gastritis, duodenitis. I stopped the PPI for almost one month and I'm still nauseous. It drives me crazy to the point were I hope to die.
Oh, I am sorry to hear that you suffer the same thing. I thought that I was crazy feeling this way as I feel like dying sometimes. Nausea is such a sickly feeling, I didn’t know it was possible to have it “permanently”. Maybe you could do some tests too. It took me 5 months to get to this point, it seems that gallbladder sludge isn’t always visible. On the other hand, I am sometimes thinking what if we have hypochlorydria as a result of ppi use? It could cause nausea too.
Did you check if your ulcers are healed, btw?
I should mention that Zyprexa 2,5mg relieves nausea efficiently, but I don’t like taking it for a long time bcz it’s an antipsychotic.
Hypochlorydria is low stomach acid. Prazoles’ side effects mention nausea, but they don’t say how long it lasts. Have you found any other reports about this somewhere?
I would guess so too, that if we stop the pill, everything goes to normal. It didn’t happen though. It’s so frustrating. An antibiotic has caused me permanent tinnitus and now this. What else?
Thank you so much for the article! Maybe we could try some of the remedies mentioned. But 2-3 months of nausea? Horrible. There is someone writing in the comments that he has been having withdrawal symptoms for more than 3 months after stopping omeprazole and went on it again.
“We don't know how long this rebound effect lasts, but we can say that it is somewhere between four weeks and three months,” she says. This rebound is theorized to the result of an overproduction of the stomach acid-stimulating hormone gastrin in response to PPI-related acid suppression.2 jul. 2009
It can take six weeks or so for this over-reaction to calm down.
(Gastroenterology, July, 2009). No one should ever stop a PPI without careful medical consultation. Some serious medical conditions may require long-term treatment despite the risk of side effects.
A review of the medical literature (Therapie, Oct. 26, 2017) concluded:
“Daily PPI exposure for more than 4 weeks is likely to trigger a rebound of acid hypersecretion about 15 days after discontinuation, and lasting from a few days to several weeks depending on the duration of the exposure.”
I am still suffering from nausea, dyspepsia and upper abdominal pain. I did a barium swallow which showed low esophageal motility, opened LES and slow barium progression through the LES. It also showed endoesophageal reflux. The radiologist suggested manometry, but the gastroenterologist disregarded me saying that the findings aren’t that serious. So I am still here, looking for answers.
I have lost a lot of weight and have had no appetite. I was diagnosed with LPR and did have Nissen fundoplication. Now I have Achalasia. Can't eat, hardly at all. I have a doctor appt this afternoon and see where this goes now. I have had no nausea during this whole time. I was told I have gastritis but no symptoms from that.
I am sorry the surgery didn’t go as well as you wished. I hope your doctor has a solution for you, maybe you could have another surgery? Nausea is one the symptoms of gastritis, but I don’t know why it’s so persistent.
