I have been taking a combination of Dexilant in the morning and Pantaprazole in the evening for 7 months now. When I went to renew my prescriptions I was informed that I was not allowed to take both medications. I was just taking pantaprozole once a day after my esophagectomy Oct 31, 2013 but started getting acid reflux in 2015 so my prescription was increased to twice a day. Last summer I started getting terrible acid reflux and suffered for several months before going to my thorasic surgeon and he started me on the combination of dexilant and pantaprozole which has been working wonderfully for me I have only had one instance and that was kind of self induced (deep fried onion rings) My concern is in stopping one of these medications abruptly safe and what would be other suggestions. I am a 5 1/2 year survivor and don't want anything to trigger or damage what is remaining of my stomach as they removed my entire esophagus and half of my stomach.
Dexilant and Pantaprazole combination... - Oesophageal & Gas...
Dexilant and Pantaprazole combination denied after using 7 months, is stopping 1 of the 2 safe?
Dexilant is much more expensive as its patent does not expire until next year. Its one of the latest PPIs and could be much more effective than Pataprazole. If you can only have one of them I would stay on Dexilant . You can always go back on Pataprazole because that is a generic and much cheaper. Some patients take a PPI twice a day and Im sure you will be able to do that with Dexilant. Speak to your GP and he will advise you accordingly.

thank you Phil, I was thinking that would be the best route to go as the dexilant is working so well for me but unsure of what the effects of suddenly stopping the pantaprozole after almost 6 years would do and if the dexilant would be able to control it all by itself. The combo has been working great, only one event since December. Oh well, will see if it works and if my Dr will have to double it up. Sadly my thorasic surgeon who I have continued to have regular follow up appts with has retired so I am dealing with just my family physician now
I take Lansoprazole and Sucralfate. The Sucralfate can only be prescribed by the hospital the dr will not prescribe it as it is in a red group of drugs (too expensive). It is soo annoying when drugs work and you have these battles to get it.
Good Luck

Hi,Iam on Dexilant, and Ranitidine.Ihave been diagnosed with stage 4 lower esophagus/upper stomach cancer.Ihave been using the two meds for years. They work pretty good to control acid reflex.Hope this helps lts worth a try.At present mine is unoperatable, hoping I can have a surgery down the road.
I was informed today that I am to stop taking the dexilant and start taking 2 pantaprazole again. didn't work 10 months ago, don't understand why it would now but we are in the hands of our physicians...we will see. If it doesn't work he will just have to prescribe me dexilant again. Thanks for all the responses. I don't post very often here but read almost all the posts
That will be down to cost as Dexilant has not come off patent. I did try Pantaprazole and it did not work for me. So I asked the GP could I change to Rabiprazole and that is very effective and works well . Together with Esomemprazole they are the newer PPIs and both are off patent. If you have any further problems ask your GP to to change your PPI.
Your not asking for this medication for Heartburn you have had major surgery and you should be able to try another PPI
Good luck
Phil
