Is it possible to have an endoscopy sitting up

I had an endoscopy yesterday. When I got the instructions it said I would be asked to lie on my left side. I find it near impossible to do I had an amputation of my right leg above knee which wasn’t done well the bone was cut too short leaving about 6 inches of flesh with no bone. I phoned them and asked could it be done sitting up and was told that could be arranged.

I couldn’t have sedation as I had nobody to pick me up and stay with me for 24 hours. I have had a few done before all sitting up. When I got there they said I had to lie on my left side it was agony. He put a thing over my mouth I can’t breathe through my nose due to previously having nasal cancer. Once the tube went in I really struggled to breathe.

On previous times I have felt it in my throat when I swallowed it, but never after that. This time I felt every single movement it really hurt. He had to give up in the end because I was in such a state. He now says I will have a CT scan instead.

I have a feeling thecreason yhey lie you on your left is so the heart moves from the Oesophagus (just what I heard). I also tried it without sedation as I was going out that night. Never again. Next time. Try and get someone to pick you up. Really hurts without .

Always had to lie down on side, maybe a CT Scan might be better?

I would have a CT scan anytime as there is nothing to it. I didn't like the MRI scan though as a CT scanner is only thin and you travel through it and you are not totally inside it unlike a MRI.

A PET scanner is the same as a CT scanner too.

A CT scan is a lot less stressful than a endoscopy and you lie flat on your back, you just have to lay still.

They inject a dye into your arm and you get a feeling like you have peed yourself....but it is just a feeling..you don't really wet yourself.

Good luck, I am sure you will be fine with a CT scan.

Hi there Sheltie,

I can't think of a reason why you shouldn't have an endoscopy sitting up, but i'm not a medical professional or anything.

I am a post Ivor Lewis survivor of three years and I have been having problems with my lungs. Because of the problems with food etc coming back up into the lungs if I lay flat. So I don't lay flat, not for any procedures and I have had quite a few.

Recently they said I had to have a bronchoscopy, which is a camera down your throat and into your lungs as opposed to oesophagus/stomach.

I insisted that I would only contemplate a bronchoscopy sitting up and they agreed to it.

Also the last time I had an endoscopy I refused to lay down for it. (I must sound a bit belligerent but i'm not), the problems with my lungs have been caused by aspirating food up into my lungs and I am not willing to take any more chances.

Try to insist on not laying down and see what they say. Also Most Importantly as one of the other replies has said. Have sedation, don't even consider it without.

Good luck with it all and I hope I am not too forthright

Regards Richard
