Hi, looking forward to hearing what others have to say on this topic, like you I'm nearly 8 years post op and I've been trying to reduce my Omeprazole with no success

This is a difficult one. I tried to do it and stayed on the low dose for six weeks .But in the end it was not worth it for me. It's about your quality of life and I did not want to keep having bouts of mild reflux in the day My consultant believes that PIPs are safe drugs that have been well researched and have been prescribed for many years. There are obvious adverse side effects with any prescription drug but it's your own personnel choice

I agree Phil, quality of life is the most important thing, and PPI's give me that 😁

Can you not have Gaviscon in place of PPI's?

No that would not be an option as you would have to continue taking them every few hours. to have the same effect as a PPI.I still use Gaviscon but only before bedtime.

I'm 12 years post op and started with 40 mg each night. About 5 years ago I split my dose to 20mg each morning and night with a good dose of Gaviscon before bed. Subsequently I reduced my morning dose to 10mg and seem largely to cope with that. I've flirted with eliminating my morning dose but don't think I've given it a fair trial because I tend to lose confidence at the slightest concern. On the relatively few occasions that I have had a major acid (?bile) attack it re-enforces my concern. I'm interested to see if their are any replies from people who have successfully coped. More questions and not an answer!

Hi I have for the last two months manage to halve my lansoprozole I used to take 30mg morning and 30 mg in the evening. I now take 30mg In the morning and just gaviscon before I go to bed lucky for me this seems to be working although I am still on tenterhooks. It is what suits you best for a good quality of life. Hope this helps.

Rather than reducing the dose, I went from effective to less effective PPIs until I eventually came off them. It took about 3 months.

esomeprazole (Nexium) - 1 month

omeprazole - 1 month

ranitidine - 1 month

I then weened myself off ranitidine over 4 weeks.

Hi werfvan5 I am 11years post op, till two years ago I had a stretch about every 8months. (After a free of being of acid and sickness of 7 months,) then when I went for a stretch two years ago, My consultant gave me the biggest stretch they could, with the largest (what the call a balloon,) they don't like to use it as it can tear your new tube, (they can repair it) I agreed because I was getting a bit fed up with acid coming at most nights. At the moment I am touching wood as I now feel so much better, I still take two tablets of Omeprazole one in morning one at night, (because of a just incase scenario). The consultant has even signed me off after 11 years and put me back to my Doctor.

Hiya .great to hear your signed off, I was having stretches up to 3 a year for 4 years but mine were the emptying of the stomach,,,,things got sorted after a rather large Hiatus Hernia op in late 2014 and now no more stretches but still a juggling act with PPIs......all the very best my friend..

I agree with Yorkshire Rose and Phil, tried to wean myself off but have gone back on to a full dose again as my last endoscopy showed irritation where the reflux had come up, As I originally had no problems with reflux but they seemed to think it could have been part of the cause of the cancer I am happy to swallow the PPis and take calcium tabs and try to do what I can to keep my bones strong.

Hello there,

This does make interesting reading, I have been very concerned about the negative press for PPi's.

I am now two and a half years post Ivor Lewis two part oesophagectomy and I can relate so well to all of the comments. I think in terms of the PPI's I have been successful with reducing my intake from 40mg omeprazole a day I have managed to get down to just one 10mg in the morning after food.

I tried for a week to reduce to half a 10mg tablet in the morning and thought I was going to succeed but unfortunately after a couple of 'episodes' I had to accept that it was not enough to keep the reflux at bay so I have gone back to one 10mg in the morning again, however I do think I will have to try again I think I may have chickened out a bit.

Thank you to the contributor who mentioned rantindine being a weaker dose, maybe I will give that a try.

And good luck to you werfvan5 hopefully you will be able to reduce over time as well

Regards

Richard
