foods for reflux.

Has anyone on here found a food or other that really helps combat reflux.I started chewing gum after each meal about 4 months ago and this has helped a bit and recently have been having a couple of jacobs cream crackers after a meal as they seem to soak up any excess acid and also have helped.Does anyone have any other ideas.

The acid in your stomach is very strong on the acid scale, far more acidic than anything you will ever eat, but try and avoid anything that you find indigestible, and that will help to reduce your stomach 'burping' contents upwards.

There are various recipe books available but personally I have not heard any recommendations for them.

Keeping an upright posture whilst eating is a good thing to do; and avoid eating within a couple of hours of going to bed / lying down, because gravity has an effect.

We're all different and react to foods differently. If you keep a food diary, you'll be able to identify your own particular trigger foods to avoid.

Barrett's Wessex charity brought out a Cool Food cookbook a few years ago that has helped others, you may download it free here: goo.gl/lUW0uA

As Chris says, we're all different. Personally, I find Twining's Digest tea, which contains fennel, peppermint, dandelion and liquorice, works wonders in settling my stomach and combatting reflux. So does oatmeal porridge made with soya milk.

If oesophagus has become a bit sore and inflamed due to acid flowing backwards too often, it may react to lots of foods. An oesophagus that is irritated in this way is known as oesophagitis (inflamed oesophagus).

If its a bit sore, a lot of things could make it sting and cause noticeable or increased discomfort. Chilli, a glass of grapefruit juice or neat spirits for instance. So when people say foods cause reflex it maybe that they are not - but they are making the symptoms more noticeable.

There is no consistent scientific evidence that any particular food leads to an increase in symptoms but there is some evidence that a high fibre diet leads to reduced reflux.

So eating more porridge, vegetables etc may help. You are getting about the right amount when your bowel movements are comfortable and easy.

The book that started me down the path to relief and avoiding regular recurrence is a very small book that can be bought on Amazon called the Acid Reflux Diet. (101 Best Foods To treat and Cure Gerd) It isnt a diet, it is a list of foods to avoid and those best to eat. It is American but they are much more into self help than we tend to be here.

The bottom line is coffee, caffeinated tea, acid fruit and tomatoes.

It is not cured my problem in my case, but it is one hell of a lot better.

It is printed by Amazon and costs very little.

Jfarl All the best.

Hi, I suffered badly with the same, at night. After years of trying everything, what works for me now is during the evening, after a meal, I sip water, about a pint between 7pm and 10pm. Prehaps you could do the same after day time meals. Hope this helps , good luck.

Hi argzxon61

Previous answers below are correct, we are all different and dieticians are still trying to find out what is best for all of us.

This has been good for me:

Avoid foods that are acidic eg tomato based or spicy such as curries

Don't eat late at night

Avoid late night coffees or tea (although I do take peppermint tea which I find settles my 'stomach')

Avoid fizzy drinks

I sometimes take a glass of milk but others have said they have found this increases the acid production

Bread or pasta or crackers can be effective for the reason you mentioned

You will find out be trial and error what is good for you.

And Alan's point about bed posture is very important irrespective what you have eaten

Hope this is useful

Good luck

FAGE Plain Yogurt is sold in the USA i think has been helpful. A bowl with honey

or fruit is vitamins and 22 grams of Protein to help with your daily budget. I was

told by a Dietician working with the Oncologist target for 80 grams of Protein,

2,500 Calories, and 80 oz of water a day. This could be alot of different foods,

combinations you have to figure out for yourself. I don't keep left overs. I try

everyday to use fresh foods. Be careful of the packaged foods. The other skill

to learn is to eat slowly and methodically to best figure your capacity. So even

if the day doesn't go well i try a small bowl of Fage Plain Yogurt before i go to

sleep especially if you have an upset stomach. The other Yogurts aren't any

good. Check out Fage Plain Yogurt.
