You may find these two links helpful. It all depends on the stage that the tumour has reached. For early stage squamous cell carcinoma of the oesophagus the successful treatment is sometimes chemo-radiotherapy. More generally, chemotherapy to shrink the tumour is given prior to surgery, and then a decision made about follow up chemotherapy after the surgery.

The UK overall cancer outcomes are generally behind the best in Europe, but once the patient is diagnosed, some of our hospitals are world class. So earlier diagnosis is a big issue for improvement in the UK

I had a junctional adenocarcinoma of the lower oesophagus and was successfully treated eight years ago with a combination of three cycles of ECX chemotherapy (epirubicin, cisplatin & capcitabin) followed by an Ivor Lewis oesophagestomy. If you want very detailed and up-to-date information on the treatment provided in the UK, I suggest that you take a look at the National Oesophago-Gastric Cancer Audit 2014, which is publicly available on the internet.
