Knee replacement

I am in line to have a total knee replacement soon, or so the hospital has informed me last week. I have both knees bone on bone so am in severe pain most of the time. I am 85 years of age and I wonder how successful these operations are, as I don't want to come out of it worse off. I will also have to put up with my other knee being very painful until that can be replaced. I feel quite despondent and wonder if there are members on here who are as old as me and had successful operations.

Not as old as you, but certainly had a very successful replacement. If the surgeon didn't think it was worth doing he wouldn’t agree to operation.

Hello, I am 82 & have had both knee joints replaced. The main thing to help your recovery is to do the exercises as advised, at times not very comfortable to do but very important if you are to have a satisfactory outcome. Best wishes & hope all goes well.

Good morning, I haven't made it to your age yet but I had mine replaced in 1999 after ten years of pain and misery and it changed my life. Fingers crossed its still going strong now (was told it had around a 15 year life span). No need to feel despondent, look forward to it and a new life. Really important that you follow the exercise routines you have, even if you find them uncomfortable, any physiotherapy that you are offered and then learn to trust it.

HiI'm 77 and had both knees replaced in August 2020 ( at the same operation) My surgeon likes to do both because you have new knees to support each other. I had to have the agreement of the anaesthetist re my general health first so it would depend on how you are in other health matters. The knee that had been bad for longer than the other has been harder to recover but the other knee recovered very quickly If you do go ahead do send me a message and I'll give you details of tips!!
