Physical activity, even for people with arthritis, strengthens muscles, keeps joints flexible, preserves good balance, improves function, and helps you maintain a healthy weight. It can also help you to manage other conditions like heart disease and diabetes.
It is recommended for adults with OA to get 2.5 hours of moderate aerobic (walking, running, etc) and 2 days of muscle strengthening exercise per week to improve pain and function. Always consult with your healthcare provider before beginning any physical activity routine, especially if you have special issues or multiple chronic conditions.
Just starting out? Find ways to move that are safe and enjoyable, set goals that are attainable, and be an active participant in your life everyday.
