As far As I knOw they are mild sedatives used in low doses for pain relief. The only side effect I know about is they can make you drowsy. But I'm not a doctor so don't take my word as gospel

Hi

These are primarily an anti-depressant however, in lower dosage they are used as a muscle relaxant and aid painkillers to help you sleep.

They should be taken a couple of hours before bedtime to get the best benefit and at a low dose there shouldn't be any alarming side effects other than a little dozy the next day.

I take 20/30mg with 2 Tramadol to help aid sleep and a restful night, I'm well enough to drive the next morning although I have been taking them quite a while now.

Just remember to take them a couple of hours before you go to bed to get the benefit of them. x

Hi I was taking from 10 - 30mg of these nightly last year prior to diagnosis and they helped me a lot. They are used in a low dose to divert neuropathic pain I believe and also they have a sedative quality and are non-adictive so they are very good for some people. I was given them because I told my GP I was experiencing neuralgia/ toothache like pain in my hands and he felt this might help along with other pain remedies. I haven't been in much pain since the DMARD drugs have started working so I only take them occasionally now because they do make me sleepy the next day. But if I'm flaring up or need a really good night's sleep guaranteed I take one at about 8.30pm and go to bed by 10.30. Hope this helps. Tilda x

As others have said, at that dose they are NOT antidepressants, but used to help with chronic pain, as they have a proven effect on modifying pain responses.

They will take a week or two to get used to, and you may need to take them a bit earlier in the evening. Taking them 12 hours before you want to wake up again is a good idea.

took them last night as perscribed

AMITRIPTYLINE is one of those drugs which has varied uses in different doses. It is an anti depressant but in larger doses usually about 100mgs, they are also prescribed for nocturnal enuresis ie bed wetting. They are also used for people who have neuropathic pain patient.co.uk/health/Neurop... the usual dose is around 35-50 mgs however a lot of people can't take this size of dose as it makes them too sleepy. I take 50mgs most nights, I don't have the sedatory effect although a friend of mine can't take more than 5mgs as she is too sleepy the next day. It can help with a combination of drugs, I'm also on Meloxicam & co codamol 500/30mgs.

We all vary in how we react to drugs.

Hope that helps - don't get caught up thinking they are just an anti depressant.

Years ago I had Amitryptiline for a bout of depression caused by a family bereavement, it was given 2 x's a day 100 mgs, so you can see as an antidepressant it was given in big doses, sometimes bigger than that! It's main side effect was being very tired almost hung over and being slower to pee!

In orthopaedics ( I am an ortho nursing sister) it is used in low doses usually 10-25mgs rising to 50-75mgs at night, It was found to act a a muscle relaxant and really useful in the treatment of backpain and arthritic pain.

Now I am back on it 25-75 mgs at night for my RA, mostly for my feet, and it really works and 25mgs is prob enough, if I'm on early shift I either don't take it or take half a tablet.

I still get that slightly groggy feeling the next morning BUT the trick is to take it at about 7pm then it is working nicely by bed time and I have slept it off by the morning. I must say also that the side effects lessen as your body becomes accustomed to the drug, if I take it 9pm on I know I will be groggy and have a yak taste in my mouth so I carry it with me if out and try to remember to take it early.

I have a slipped disc in my spine and when I get burning pins and needles in my legs from a trapped nerve in my spine I take this. It is an antidepressant but is also prescribed to dull nerve pain. I took it at night as well to help me get some sleep as it has a calming effect. With some people it is too calming and they fall asleep during the day!

I could not have managed without them when my legs were `on fire' from nerve pain.

hi joan wouldnt be disc l4/l5 would it

joan_w profile image
joan_w in reply tominka

The slipped disc is on L1\2 - my consultant says he has never seen one this far out in that position. I am waiting for a spinal fusion op to heal and then depending on how my back feels, I may have to have this sorted out.

I had spondylolisthesis on L4\5 - which means that one vertebrae had gone forward on top on the other because all the facet joints were worn out. That meant that all the nerves were bending and it was really awful. Lots of burning pain in my legs.

I have had a spinal fusion operation for this and am waiting for the 2 bone grafts to fuse properly. One looks OK but the other is still granulated. My consultant says it takes a year so I still have a way to go. I still get some burning but not enough to take regular meds for, although I do occasionally have to take some amitriptyline which seems to stop the burning quite quickly.

they said l4/l5 on mine is bulging to the left but should not be impinging on the nerve well that was out in 1991 and never gave me any trouble after that.

but wich is left left leg ?

Hi, I got them in a very low dose for nerve pain after suffering from an infection that left me with nueropathy. Larger dosages are used as anti depressants and for bed wetting I believe in youngsters. They seem to used form everything form chronic pain to depression. I used 5 mg and found they helped me over a bad spell until my body healed.

minka profile image
minka in reply to126Jessie

what was the infection can you tell me

Hi john, I take 50mgs off this and have done for over three years now with no problems, mine is used to help me relax and aid sleep, when I have worse pain/flare days I take 75mgs off it along with 7.5 mgs off zopiclone to help me sleep.
