Is RA hereditary?: - NRAS
Is RA hereditary?
Not for me, as far as I know, no-one in my family has had it previously.
I really hope I'm just a one-off in my family!
I always believed that we (people with RA) are predisposed (genetically) to RA, and I know it is in both sides of my family, but a generation back?? Is it possible that some people have never been properly diagnosed with RA because it was a mild form, and just assumed it was down to something ele or old age? I don't know.

as julie says pre- disposed.. .. there is some evidence of some degree of hereditory link
Im the only one in my family too fortunately some relatives have ad Arthritis but not RA.
Yes, but it seems to skip a generation.I didn't know it was in my fathers side of the family until my cousin told me. I couldn't ask my father as he had past away.
Yes my grandmother had it , I was diagnosed 11 years ago and my older sister has just been diagnosed a year ago
Oh my, from what you are all saying it seems we were destined for it one way or another. Ah well, best get on with it then. Anyway there is no point worrying about something we can't change. Thanks for all those who responded. Just don’t tell my daughter or my granddaughters please. Ax
My grandmother and my aunts on maternal side have & had it. So maybe I think might be my nieces on my side, hopefully not my daughters!
The answer is no- there is no single gene that is RA and if you have this gene you will get RA but there have been recent advances in the genetic research on this.
This article explains the link between RA and Lupus a little in terms of genetics.
Several people in my family have immuno diseases.
