Hd 2/3 glasses of wine at a dinner on Thursday (don't normally have more than half a glass) and have suffered ever since. I don't think there is a joint or muscle that doesn't hurt. Had MTX on Wednesday and Enbrel on thursday. Can anyone tell me if there is a connection? LavendarLady

Don't know about the Enbrel but my Mtx says 'Do not drink alcohol' :-( (as does the leflunomide that I also take). I imagine that you would be de-hydrated if you don't normally drink that amount.

Sorry not to be of more help - haven't been able to drink alcohol for a long time now due to kidney disease and meds.

I hope that you're soon feeling better:-)

Hi there - I asked my rheumatologist about this a couple of months ago as I was going away, and do like the odd glass of wine. I'm on leflunomide, and when I got the first prescription from the pharmacy I was told very specifically to avoid all alcohol. (When I was on MTX my GP had said that having a couple of glasses every now and then is absolutely fine.) Anyway rheumy said that in moderation alcohol is fine with any of these meds (although admittedly I'm not on Enbrel which is obviously stronger than lef or MTX, so not sure if it's the same for that) - but said that if your liver function tests suddenly jump and you are having alcohol regularly they will tell you to hold off, but if no problems with liver then fine to have in moderation!

In your case above, I agree with Cece that if you don't normally have that amount though it would be very likely to affect you...keep an eye on the blood tests...

Ive been told by my rheumy to avoid alcohol on mthx days and on enbrel days and limit it the day before day after etc, so basically I get one day a week I can have a better drink.

Although Ive also found since RA, I can no longer drink like I used to and a few drinks is more than enough for me now.

Take care

Hi LL,

I have to say I can only really drink one or two glasses of wine these days, as I noticed that I got 'violently' ill if I had than that since starting meds, I'm now on Humira, Mtx & plaquinil. Also, I asked my Rheumatologist about avoiding alcohol the day you take Mtx, as my elderly aunt had said she does enjoy her tipple but avoids the specific day, my consultant scoffed and said that would not make any diff whether was the day or not. She said if she was on it she would only enjoy the occasional glass of wine. Personally too much alcohol has me on the big white phone and its just not worth it, maybe thats the bodies way of warning me!

Thanks Everyone. I don't normally drink at all except for the occasional half glass of rose wine. I find white gives me indigestion and red a headache. Usually I am on soft drinks but went a bit mad at the dinner with friends. 3 of us got through 2 bottles of rose and the 3rd friend as she was driving only had about 1 1/2 glasses! So my own fault. Felt a lot better on Sunday and enjoyed a day boating on the river at Horning (Norfolk Broads) in glorious sunshine. Had lunch at the Swan Inn and had a glass of rose with lunch but only drank half of it washed down by diet coke. I do lead an exciting life! Should have re read my MTX leaflet although strangely enough the Enbrel bumpf does not mention alchohol! Like Gina K , I find I can't drink much these days since being on rheumy drugs. What a bummer.
