Quinine is a malaria drug as you probably know and although I haven't had the foul taste with the Plaquenil - when I was in India in my distant youth I took Quinine and the taste was so vile I used to gag and feel sick all day whenever I took it. It's the same very bitter taste you get in certain foods I believe - I always used to think that must be how it worked to keep the mosquitoes away because blood must taste so foul! Have you been taken off Plaquenil (hydroxichloraquine) and been put on Quinoric Hydroxy then - or is it just under a different trade name without the coating to stop the taste prevailing perhaps?

How funny - I used to have a different brand of hydroxy which I hated as tasted really foul, and I asked for something else and now have the Quinoric film coated tablets (a pinky/purple & white box made by Bristol labs) and have no problems! Talk to your pharamacist and see if they'll give you a different make. I had the same thing with the first type of sulphasalazine tabs I got, and eventually the pharamcist gave me the enteric coated version which are fine. Polly

Yes, I find they taste foul, especially if I don't keep them in the foil but put them in my daily dispenser box with everything else. Maybe they start to deteriorate in air.

Mouthwash helps a bit.

Hi

I prefer the plaquenil brand to the quinoric. But my gp tends to prescribe the latter as its cheaper. Since both work for me I don't mind, but preference is the plaquenil. The same is with codeine I get prescribed zappin instead of cocodomols. I prefer the cocodomols in capsules as they are easier to swallow and tend to work quicker where as zappin is a caplet. Again its down to cost.

ps I find you tend to get branded stuff from the hospital pharmacy, but they only give you a month worth, where as the gp gives me 60 quinoric and 100 zapains at a time!

:D

I'm pleased to read this thread; as some of you know I've had a bad taste/smell for a couple of months now and was blaming Sulfa for it, however I've been taking Quinoric for the last couple of months having previously had Plaquenil. So I've just penned a letter to my GP to see if she thinks it could be the cause. I hope so - I'm fed upi not being able to drink wine or eat chocolate!

Hi i have recently been given Quinoric instead of plaquenil although I don't find they taste bad they do give me an upset stomach. My Pharmacist said if I want Plaq I have to get the doc to specifically prescribe them. She said they are the same drug just the Qui is branded and Plaq isnt.

Ive had both plaquenil and Quinoric and find its only the Quin thats tastes bad, i cant swallow tablets so have to put them on my tongue right at the back for them to go down so it sits right on my tastebuds! Im going to ask my pharmasist if i can have plaq from now on and see what they say, it puts me right off taking them!! And tilda if i was a mossie i woulnt want our blood with or without the tabs, imagine a mosquito with RA!! I usually have some chocolate after ive taken meds (and usually throughout the day, ha ha!) just to get rid of the taste, and i find fresh orange juice works well too. Im glad its not just me because you never know with this disease.

And i think both Quinnie and Plaq are the same, ish, but made by different labs and as suspected i think Quin may be cheaper, it seems we can put a price on our health.......
