I moved here in April this year and now have a garden.
I had no idea I was any good at gardening. I’ve excelled and am shocked at what I’ve achieved. I think in part because I knew something was wrong with my health, just didn’t know what. It made me strive to get things nice in the garden before I got too sick …my hands were getting weaker and stiffer ..anyway I achieve a lot then found out I had RA I still go out and still do things in the garden but not quite on the scale I did at the moment. I’m hoping slowly I can do little bits..and build it up. I’m just a bit exhausted right now and have some pain in hands..
I grew some sunflowers from little seeds..thought I’d share a photo of one of them with you.
the difference in the garden now to when I moved in is unbelievable..I never even thought I’d like gardening thought I’d hate it in fact …it’s been my saviour !
ps there’s a little bee on there if you look closely too 😃

That's so beautiful and cheery. Yes I saw the bee. It's good to hear that you're getting so much from gardening. I love my small garden and although it's hard work at times, I'm glad I have it . An added bonus is the birds who visit the feeders.
That’s fantastic and nothing brings a smile to the face in the garden like a sunflower. I used to spend my weekends on long hilly hikes and not being able to do that anymore was so upsetting. A few years ago I finally got to the top of the waiting list for an allotment and it’s changed my life so I completely understand. Happy gardening 🪴
helenlw7 I have some plants in pots now too. The ground is difficult to dig with stiff hands , although I’ve managed to plant a lot.
I painted the coal shed too and put fairy lights up in there, it’s my sun room now. I see it being a place I can sit in winter too and watch the snow 😊
Nothing like getting your hands in the dirt!!makes me feel better everytime.I've just had a potting bench made for me the same height as a kitchen work top, so no awkward stooping. With the hands ,long handled hand tools ,and pointed spades and trowls help.
Beautiful, well done. A garden and growing things is so good for the soul. This is one of my best garden buys - you can use it one way to kneel in and the handles help you up or you can use it the other way as a little seat although I never use mine like that. I bought it for my husband who was having a hip replacement but I use it all the time now coopersofstortford.co.uk/ga...
A garden is so good for your well being if you can manage it and like doing the work, but I've found you do need to pace yourself. I would be lost without my garden to Potter in.
Hey. That’s beautiful. A bit of green space can really cheer u up. You’ve got RA in your fingers. But they’re also green!! My mum had a lovely little garden. I live in a flat. (Wish i even had a balcony!) When i found Covent Garden too much. Too crowded. (I live right by all the theatres). Loads n loads of tourists. I used to go back to my family home. (North London). I would get off the bus & feel so relieved. I’d have space to move! My mum would always make me a lovely cuppa. She loved to cook. Always spicey food. (She was Northern Irish). We would sit in her lovely garden, eat & she’d play some lovely jazz on her computer. I love to sing jazz & sometimes she would dance! She died 7 yrs ago. I’m so glad i have some sweet memories like that. Enjoy your lovely garden! 🐝🐝
Thank you for sharing this, memories like that are lovely to go back and visualise.
. I love jazz too I have such a varied taste in music I love Parisian cafe type stuff too. I love Covent Garden but living there yes I can see how the break would be good ..I too lived in a flat for many years, I hadn’t realised how the little green space helped. I had no idea I had green fingers. I guess winter will be a test..
A garden’s great. Especially with a few glasses of vineo!! My mum had some lovely garden lights & tealights. I always pestered her to a have a summer party. But not all the neighbours got on together. Neighbour politics! When she died. I couldn’t face going home much. Too empty without her there. Her sweet garden got too wild. There was a guy that used to help. But he got greedy! We fell out with him. Anyway. I’m sure the winter will give you some more colourful ‘challenges’. Enjoy. X
I’m now in a lovely old pub with my partner Jorge in Waterloo. It’s down a beautiful old rd. It’s called the King’s Arms. Some lovely old cottages around it. Very crowded. I don’t like mental crowds. Enjoy your Saturday night. X
I bought some miniature sunflowers. Just chucked them in a pot on my windowsill & sort of forgot about them. They all came out. They were sweet. Makes u feel you’ve achieved something! X
Sunflowers are so rewarding 🌻. I grew up from a toddler growing things in the garden, blessed with grandparents who showed me.
My biggest gripe is how I'm unable to do much in the garden but it still rewards me with plants bursting forth, and due to not overly tidying it insects galore. My recent acquisition is a wormery, a project for the grandson.
What seeds you don’t eat save for next year. I sold my greenhouse she I realised I could not use it much and I’m glad it’s gone to Wales to a man who was working this way and it was just what he wanted. I let him take the trays, heater etc as it was going to a good home. I used the space for a second patio but didn’t realise just how hot it got in that bit of the garden. If you’ve space plant a tree, so lovely and we all need trees. I’d suggest a few garden items requested as Christmas presents might be handy. Gardening is a bug, and once bitten it’s so hard to resist just one more tree or leaving a garden centre without a trolley of bits. And you simply can’t have too many daffodils or sunflowers, dahlias or fushias. Lol
A lot of supermarket stuff like garlic can be planted up and take a lot of cuttings if you can blag from neighbours. Fuchsias will root in water and geraniums are very easy to root on a windowsill and you get indoor plants too. I've bought bulbs from RHS Wisley for rarer daffodils but Tesco do brilliant value packs and they gave a lovely display of Freesias last year only £5 for two packs and had enough to cut for indoors. And see if any of the local National Trust places near you are doing plant sales as I've still got daffodils from a NT property bought in the green over 20 years ago that have multiplied and still bloom well every year. I remember buying them as we'd planted a couple of Liquidambar trees to replace dead birches.
I've got into gardening this year and love Gardener's World (lots of episodes on BBC iPlayer) and watch lots of YouTube videos too - have found a few which I really like and have subscribed so easy to find. Watching programmes/reading about it is great for those days when you haven't got the energy to do the real thing 😉 Most garden centres have a reduced section and have found some real bargains which just need a bit of TLC.
It’s unbelievable how much I now enjoy learning little things about gardening and plants etc. Never in a month of Sundays would I have envisaged such a thing.
I love it ! I only got into it in April this year too…😊🪴🪴🪴
