Night sweats after steroid injection?

Hi

I eventually got steroid injections in my knees and fluid drained off on Thursday. Even after starting Hyrimoz my CRP had gone from 41 in May to 78 a week ago.

Since the injection, I’ve woken up soaked in sweat around my shoulders, neck and back of my head, when I lookin the mirror my cheeks are really flushed. I’ve never had this with steroid injections before and I’m assuming this is the cause? Has anyone else experienced anything like this, it’s so bad I have to get up and get another pillow and change my top!

The positive is my knees are looking much better and I’m taking it easy as instructed for a few days, not that I was that active before due to the pain!

I’d urge to get some medical advice perhaps 111 although it’s nothing I’ve experienced it sounds nasty. It could be nothing but best to be sure. I hope you’re feeling better soon.

Yes, I’ve had this - it's steroid flushing and it’s temporary. I have had many intra-muscular and joint cortisone injections over the past 34 years and sometimes get this horrible sweating and flushed face and mostly I don’t.

Don’t know why you sometimes get this and not others but be assured, it will go after a few days. Glad to hear the injections have helped and hope they go on doing so for a good long time!

Oh thanks, that make me feel better, I feel ok in myself I just look like I’ve incredibly rosie cheeks, the sweating was quite alarming though. I’ve had quite a few injections in the last few years but never had this before, let’s hope it’s a good sign, the doctor hoped it would last 3 months and soon improve. He also thought it would be responsible for the high CRP as they are large joints. Fingers crossed now x

Yes, it can happen with steroids. It sounds like you had both knees done. I suffered this in 2017, when the rheumatology esp, decided to inject both my shoulder and knee. She was leaving the team, and was concerned with my struggles. However, she did say they are only supposed to inject one joint at a time, but felt as I’d been on long term steroids, that I’d cope ok with two being done. It helped both joints, but I did get the flushes and sweats, which gradually settled.

Yes, thinking about it my GP would only do one at a time when I was desperate and the hospital had a long wait. My consultant did do both shoulders last year but I was ok that time. I slept much better last night and hardly sweated, I feel pretty washed out now but that’s probably because I’ve been living with the pain for months and not having slept well for so long that my body has just gone phew thank goodness for that! The swelling has gone down but I’m so nervous to bend them, the tendons still feel tight!

Hi I sometimes get steroid injections in to my facet joints due to a spinal condition - usually about 3 injections and get this nearly every time. I feel for you as it is very unpleasant- but all for a good cause hopefully. Hope the knees feel much better soon.

Thanks, that’s rough having 3 in your spine, ouch! I’ve been on hyrimoz for just over 8 weeks now but my knees just kept getting worse, but I realise I have to be patient. I’m certainly worse than I was this time last year, I don’t appear to be one of the lucky ones that finds the right combination of drugs quickly. Patience is a virtue…

I get night sweats from steroids, although usually it’s just the tablets that do it. I also get night sweats when my RA is flaring. Now I get night sweats because of my age!

Oh dear, I luckily avoided the night sweats because of my age, whatever the cause they are not pleasant I feel for you. I never had them with oral steroids. I seem to be over the worst now with the sweats and I am not having to live on painkillers that just took the edge off the pain. Just hope it lasts…..

Yes I've had lots over the years and I get bad facial swelling, fluid retention and morning sweets lol. But still worth it to get a few weeks of joint relief ! 😌

Yes, frequently had these symptoms after steroid jabs. They tend to settle fairly quickly. I was always given a information sheet which outlined possible side effects but it has been some years since I needed them.

I am having those exact symptoms myself after my steroid injection in my hand. I am drenched with sweat, and it is worse than when I went through menopause. Sorry you are experiencing this, although I am very glad your knees are feeling better.
