Have you discussed this with your rheumy team? When I was first diagnosed I was given some leaflets about exercise and I was also referred to the rheumatology OT who gave me some hand exercises and wrist splints as well as guidance on what to do/avoid which was really helpful. My hands/wrist were my weakness so didn't talk much about other exercise.
Just found this page on the NRAS website but lots more great resources there - nras.org.uk/resource/exerci...
Check out Versus Arthritis on UTube and face book. They have excercises on there while you're waiting to see a hand physio. They are the same as I was given by a hospital hand physio.
Hi I've had RA for 14 years and find gentle swimming a god send. I've a knee replacement and waiting for the other one to be done (bone on bone). It helps me to keep moving and I don't feel too much pain in the water. And feel great afterwards. Good luck finding something that helps you.
Hi biker, have a look at the Smile-RA series of videos. The last one is on exercise. Not specifically for hands, but very useful for a base knowledge on exercise on the whole.
I bought a hand strengthening set recently because I have inflamed tendons in my fingers and that has helped. I also open and clench my fists all the time, even though it hurts! Also a pinching movement, as if you were trying to pick up flour from a surface.
I hope you find something that helps you.
I have been a martial instructor for over 35 years , 8 years ago I was diagnosed with PMR, SAPHO syndrome and RA , I’m still a martial arts instructor just not as aggressively competitive as I was then . Life goes on and we adjust to the hurdles that are put in front of us . Positivity is the answer there is always away we just have to keep searching . Good luck, you got this 👍🤞🙏
Warwick Medical school came up with the SARAH hand and arm exercises which are often used by OT's. They are designed specifically for RA. I think an OT can send you a link to the booklet.
