Hi, I’m interested to hear about people’s experiences of pain behind the knee. I will of course be seeking medical advice from my doctor and I appreciate everyone is different.
I’ve been experiencing some pain/discomfort behind the knee when I’m walking downstairs (usually just the first step down) or when I might be bending / squatting down. It’s hard to describe, other than that.
Does anyone with RA issues in the knee or Osteoarthritis experience this type of discomfort, when going downstairs? Not sure if it might be either of those, or simply that I’m not moving enough during the day (as I now work from home.) As I said, I will be contacting my doctor.
Interested to hear from anyone with similar experiences. Thanks.

hi Jamie, I do and had 2 MRI scans at the weekend for it. I find gentle exercise helps me best and drinking lots of water, I also wear a knee support when it’s bad which takes the pressure off. Boots sell a good range. Hope it eases soon
I have intermittent knee issues; the right one especially. I have a mix of RA, OA, Fibromyalgia and Hyper-Mobility Syndrome going on. My advice has been to do daily exercises to build up the surrounding muscles. They then do ’more of the work’ rather than the joint itself. I have been told off for using a brace 🤣. I have a knee support cushion which is very helpful :
very interested to hear your experience. I had a bakers cyst rupture in my right knee back in February. Since then it’s been aspirated twice and had three steroid injections. Unfortunately it’s still unresolved and after fracturing the femur and elbow on my other side the cyst is wreaking revenge on the increased pressure being out through my right leg whilst I’ve been on crutches. They’re currently investigating the cyst with mri and ultrasound to ensure it’s not a sarcoma or PVMS (as it’s almost the size of a grapefruit) but I suspect I will need to resort to surgery which I know comes with risks. Interested to know how you came to make decision re knee replacement and it you can recommend your surgeon? Thanks for any advice you can offer.
hello Darkrose58 I would be so grateful for any insight as to how you resolved your Bakers Cyst as mine is persisting and very painful. Am being told by several knee specialists that knee replacement is risky and not guaranteed to resolve the cyst and I need to look at an alternative biologic drug to the Etanercept that I’m currently on ( which may no longer be effective after 6 years) to initially reduce the inflammation. Now very limited in my mobility a year after the cyst ruptured. Thank you for any advice and also details of the surgeon who treated you.
both my knees complain at being straightened or bent! Going downstairs or down a slope is a festival of pain! Luckily moving to our new bungalow on Friday so no more stairs!
The way I had it explained to me was that fluid builds up in both in front and behind the knee joint which prevents the full range of movement and a world of pain. Physio makes it worse because it aggravates the joint so the only way to manage it is to do a bit then rest a lot!
I've had similar since developing a Baker's cyst a few years ago.
Even though it's shrunk a lot now and isn't very obvious, the discomfort is still there. I'd had twinges in the knee on stairs before and I think it's the osteoarthritis.
Unfortunately I don't think there's a lot that can be done for them as they just come back.
hi, I have pain behind the right knee, I have a Bakers cyst, a swelling of fluid when knee becomes swollen from RA flares. But I periodically get flares in both knees, then walking up& downstairs is painful.
Just wanted to say thanks for the topic my left knee swells at the back and your topic has helped give me insight. Especially helpful is the link Criplady posted.
I had a steroid injection in my left knee while back and it's helped.
Ironically I do go up and down my stairs a few times in a row for exercise, and to try to move fluid along.
