No I haven’t, you really need to speak to your doctor as black stools should be checked out. Hopefully it’s just something you’ve eaten that’s made them this colour. 🤞🏻

No, never have in 13 years, even at higher doses. It is listed as a potential side effect, in an overdose though. You are only prescribed 10 mg & taking it once a week aren't you? If that's correct it seems unlikely.

Please don't delay seeing your primary physician though, or maybe better report it to your Rheumy, whoever can see you first.

With the caveat that I’m not medically qualified. No, but my understanding is that mtx can occasionally cause side effects that may present like this. Regardless of whether it’s related to mtx, though, black stools are something that should always be promptly raised with a medical professional: it’s not always a sign of a serious problem, but it can be.

Thanks for your replies, I did contact my rhemy and he advised me to see my PCP. Appointment set

Never in over 40 years of taking MTX.

No, been on it 6yrs and never had that issue. Black stools is usually a sign of bleeding within the gut, higher up. It needs prompt investigation, the only other med known to cause it is Iron tablets. May be coincidental that it’s happened at the same time as starting MTX. Hope you get answers soon.

hi are you on folic acid? Usually take for MTX side affects. that will give you dark stools.

Does it for you Swanfull? I'm on 30 mg folic acid weekly & I don't have dark stools. If you do please see your GP about it.

Hi there not black but dark 😂 I was told it was the iron content in it x

Ok, as long as you know why you have. 👍

I’ve never heard this Swanfull, who told you that please as I can’t find anything anywhere saying folic acid contains iron? I’ve been taking it 6 days a week for 25+ years and never had dark stools.

Are you taking any non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs like naproxen? They can cause bleeding and black stools. Should be taken seriously and you need to consult your GP.

I know you've had great advice already I just wanted to say that Riveroxaban taken without food gives people bright green ones. Most alarming, and it happened in a hospital when they come round with meds and wait while taken despite being advised has to be with food and breakfast hasn't come round yet. Anyway the nurse came running when I said you'd better come and see this. Never said we'll wait again for the following three weeks. lol x

The misconceptions are that methotrexate has caused a problem if you're looking for something to blame that's okay, but in reality methotrexate lowers your bodies immune system from doing damage to your joints but you may have a problem that could be unrelated to rheumatoid arthritis but your immune system isn't firing on all cylinders, so the real cause needs to be established. Have you been drinking Guinness? It affects me in that way 😂.
