mattresses - thanks for all the replies

Many thanks to everyone for all the helpful replies on this topic. It's looking like memory foam might not be the way to go after all, especially if we have more hot summers like the last one. I will go through all the replies more carefully and make notes. I might end up trying a mattress topper first (hadn't occurred to me to do that!) and see if that helps. Actually my RA was diagnosed over 20 years ago, so i don't think there's much hope of it going away now....😔

Thanks again for all your help. x

Look out for Black Friday sales. I got my goose down topper from an M&S January sale and it’s heavenly 😇.

We bought our mattress from The Wool Room. Keeps you cool in summer and warm in winter. It cost us a small fortune but it is heaven to get into bed.

Spent the last few weeks trying out mattresses. UUUURRRRGGGHHHH!!!!! It is awful trying to pick out a mattress. I know what I don't like but figuring out which is best is soooooo hard. I think that if you go into a store and try the memory foam beds then you'll know right away if you like them. You can get different densities. My friend loves hers. As soon as I lay on the memory foam it was a hard NO for me. They are really awful IMHO. Did the hotel ever get back to you and tell you what type of bed you slept on?

I tried memory foam too , years ago for my RA, but found it too hot and difficult coping with the indentation from my body . I also tried a Dulopillow mattress but that was too firm . In the end my husband unearthed a very old memory foam type topper ( no cover ) that we'd used when camping ( in our youth ) in our trailer tent . We put this on the existing mattress. This works a treat and accommodates the bony RA nodule on my right wrist and the sore upper arm on my left side ( due to arthritic shoulder ) . I don't spend a lot of the night on either side of my body and can't sleep on my back , so I'm a revolving door for most of the time but this works for me . 🙄😁

Oh joy!! Our new mattress arrived & it's heavenly. We went against type & decided to try a wool 3000 pocket sprung. The difference… I can't tell you. It's a Hyder Beds & if it makes any difference or if you believe it we got it on the Black Friday deals. Either way the comfort so far makes it worth the money paid. The delivery men were so good as we only thought after we'd bought it a 3000 spring bed will be on the heavy side & didn't tick the box to deliver to room. They didn't bat an eyelid, took it upstairs easy as anything. They were given a Christmas box for their help.

I hope you're successful in your search Cutes.

We have a hybrid mattress which sounds vaguely scarey I know. A fully sprung mattress encased in memory foam. Because it's only a few inches of foam it's not hot and doesn't make it hard to turn over, a major no-no if you struggle with movement. It's a difficult and expensive decision to make especially if you get it wrong so I don't envy you the job.
