What’s the consensus on drinking the day before mtx?

I’m not talking a three day bender here! It’s just that i got good liver results today and want a tipple tonight but should really take my mtx tomorrow ( for reasons too boring to explain I can’t really delay it)

I’ve never been told not to drink the day before or after but I feel like I’ve absorbed the idea from somewhere!

I quite often have a glass of wine on a Sunday before injecting Monday with no ill effects but whether I should or not is a different matter so I'll be interested in the answers you receive!

Hahaha good point! Sometimes it might be better not to ask!

It's never made a difference to me. The only time I've had abnormal liver tests was after a holiday when I probably exceeded weekly recommended amounts, though definitely not by much. Went straight back down on re-test. Lesson learnt.

Thank you that’s reassuring 😁

I only abstain on mtx day

When you say you “had good liver results today”….do you mean you always have good results…….or that you struggle sometimes? If the latter….I’d forget it….otherwise a glass of wine probably wouldn’t hurt but as you actually have to think about it…I’d ask your rheumy nurse.

Thanks AC. No touch wood they’ve always been quite good but I am paranoid because my first drug was sulphasalazine and the registrar didn’t tell me to get any blood tests. When I finally did some bloods my liver was sky high. Oops! Cue panic stricken call from the rheum nurse.

As you have had elevated liver results in the past I would run in past your nurse.

Fair point. Mind you my consultant was positively outraged when I told him I would have a dry Christmas due to the proximity of my blood test 😂

My advice is don't drink at all. It isn't worth it. I used to drink wine very regularly and the day I started mxt I stopped. That is 20 years ago and I haven't missed it at all. My liver is far more important.

The specialist who started me on MTX, works as a medical adviser for Nass. She said it is a very American idea these days, and that as long as you remain within government guidelines you should be fine. I drink a glass of wine or 2 single G&Ts 5 nights a week. My bloods are always fine, and my team are happy with this. Do I have around 10 units a week.

Thanks so much for your reply. I decided to Go for it! This resource is really so helpful. It’s great to be able to communicate with people in a similar situation
