There is significant crossover between cervicogenic and occipital headaches, to the point they can be almost indistinguishable: I had occipital headaches originating from an underlying congenital malformation, but aside from having some occipital nerve damage from the surgeries I’ve had to relieve the symptoms of that, it’s been suggested recently I still have persistent pain and neck issues due to cervicogenic headaches stemming from my inflammatory arthritis. Pain management for both is very similar with nerve blocks and Botox injections being the usual course, although these have very mixed results. Recent studies show that cervicogenic headaches respond less favourably to Botox than occipital ones. A few years back I had a nerve block that was brilliant but only lasted three weeks, and Botox jabs that were much less effective, but the effect lasted 4 months.
