Hi all, has anyone experienced pain in rib/chest area. Pain is awful, difficult to breathe in as like a stabbing pain. It is variable in severity and frequency. Does ease a bit as day goes on and after codeine. Left side only. I honestly am thinking it is my RH. Any help appreciated. Thanks.

Maybe costochondritis? Often get it with RA. It’s inflammation along ribs and the joint between sternum and ribs, VERY painful!

Talk to your rheumy team or GP.

I've been experiencing something similar.. At first I thought it was a chest infection but then decided it was a combination of asthma/ hayfever... It seems to have settled a bit since I started on prescription antihistamines but I'm not quite sure if that's because my asthma is aggravating it less and there's an additional cause as it's still there albeit not as bad! I hope you manage to get to the bottom of it, let us know how you get on!

I have ankylosing spondylitis and my ribs are fused. I have 0.8cm chest expansion, constantly feels like I’m trapped in a vice. Painful to sneeze, cough or even yawning. I also have Atelectasis in my lungs which is areas have collapsed due to the lack of rib expansion. Since September I’ve been increasingly short of breath which didn’t ease with asthma meds. Was diagnosed in April with pulmonary fibrosis. Apparently 1% of AS patients get PF. There currently is no treatment, and it’s progressive. Feel like a 90yr old trapped in a 55yr olds body.

It may be costochondritis so see your GP nsaids can help with it, and heating pads help

I had pleuresy a few years ago which felt similar. Maybe it would be a good idea to speak to your GP. Hope it settles soon.

I hope by now you’ve spoken to the doctor about this pain, always better to get pains like that checked out.

Talking with your doctors is best. They have the knowledge and access to the tests that can help differentiate whether it’s your rib cage or your lungs or something else. I hope that you get evaluated and feel better soon!!
