I’m Perimenopause and I might be starting combined HRT patches soon and I’m taking methotrexate injections. Any one on here on these medications and how are they working together?

I will be talking options with my dr soon.

Thanks

I was on tablet HRT when I started Methotrexate; I told my rheumy at my first consultation and she didn't comment so obviously had no concerns.

I started it in my perimenopause and took it for 20 years. The patches were brilliant and I’ve never felt so well. Even when RA came on to the scene I’m sure it helped a lot, even if it was just with energy levels and mood. I take Mxt and there was no problem.

Can i ask how you found out you were perimenopausal? Ive been waking through the night soaked in sweat. This has been going on a while. Never through the day though. Also my periods stopped 11 months ago. Before this it only came for 1 day and went again. This was for about 2 years. X

You can ask your GP for a blood test for this and they will be able to tell you

That's the theory but hormone levels can change hourly, never mind daily, during perimenopause so blood tests are notoriously unreliable; it's better to go by symptoms and menopause-aware doctors prefer to do that.

True, that's important too. With the blood test, it's usually repeated after 6 weeks, to check for variations.

I'm on Evoril combined HRT patches and inject 20mg of mtx, been on both for about 10 years. No problem for me.

Hi. Im on HRT patches and have been for 6 months and although I'm not on Methotrexate I do take Benepali, biosimilar injections. I've had no major issues though recently had rosacea confirmed due to irritated/red skin on my face. Not sure this is linked to the HRT though but more likely the menopause or auto immune problems generally. No one seems to know! The patches have certainly helped me with the onslaught of the menopause though so that's been a positive move for me. Good luck!

Hi there yes I had hysterectomy back when I was 29 ,and went straight onto HRT .My meds at the time were all different to mtrx.

But after years of the hrt, I went onto mtrx, but don't remember them causing me any problems at all . I'm now 57 on a Biological drug and still on hrt. But since the lockdown 1st time round I was due to receive my implant (hrt) in Aug and it hasn't happened. But I'm not feeling that much different ,at one point my consultant told me that I would be on it till I meet my end ....so as soon as they get in touch I will ask for bloods to check my levels and if ther OK then I will do without it if its a choice. Hope this helped 🙏

I stopped mtx a few weeks ago and started hrt a week ago for migraines. I'm 50, have slighlty longer periods and one day where I had what I think were hot flushes, about 7 weeks ago. They were really brief and went away when I started moving around. My migraines were never triggered by periods, I have never had pms and so I am at a loss as to why the consultant suggested hrt.

Anyway, started estrogel and progesterone last Thursday and only managed 5 days; it made me feel even worse than I normally do - which is saying something!

It made me have a period, which was weird and I had a lovely headache to go with it and unable to sleep. I was also wiped out by mid afternoon and actually have been napping!!

All of my friends who have taken hrt have nothing but positive experiences and so I thought I would give it a go. However, even though I am 50 and have some evidence of perimenopause, I am absolutely not suffering and don't seem to be affected by it and after the last week I have decided not to carry on with it.

I hadn't had a period since January and was getting used to it, then bang, within 3 days of starting hrt I got sore boobs for the first time since in ages and spots !

It also, in spite of the consultant's hopes, did nothing for RD aches and pains which continue to progress.

Sorry to rant but I am angry with myself for giving in to what on reflection was a daft suggestion by the National Migraine Centre specialist. My first appointment with her was 6 months ago when I was just about to start mtx and she was going on about hrt then too and said the 2 medications were not contraindicated.

I had basically come to terms with migraines/cluster headaches and was lured into trying something that was obviously not going to help out of sheer desperation.
