I’m relatively new to all this and still amazed (not sure that’s the right word) at the scale of this rollercoaster of a journey when it comes to R.A.... I’ve had a strange lump appear on my right hand/wrist, towards my thumb/top of hand/base of wrist. The picture doesn’t really show it very clearly but it’s different to the usual swelling, it’s really firm but not on the joint? It’s tender to touch hurts more than usual to use...
I’m guessing this is just normal and something else to expect?
Thank you in advance for any advice 😊

Hi there Rolo - not 100% but something similar comes up in images when I've googled similar lumps. I have one underside of left wrist which I am certain is a ganglion cyst and I've had it for ages, gives me no trouble. But your bump does seem typical from pictures I have seen referring to RA in hands.I get painful lumps all over and if I fiddle with them even a bit they become really painful. My GP tells me that this is normal for RA (although I have been diagnosed with Undifferentiated Inflammatory Arthritis). With some of my early flares I noticed that they appeared intender areas so I guess he's right.
Yes I’m afraid pretty normal. I get this and sometimes the whole hand.
I’ve had a synovial cyst on the wrist joint. Didn’t hurt to touch put would inflate and deflate at will. Then it just grew and effected my nerves and I developed an ulnar drift. I had it drained but was told it would come back 3 years on it hasn’t.
Ice and rest is good as well as a support or compression gloves. If it gets bothersome tell your Gp or team .
Hello Rolo85, Thanks for posting this. I have a very similar lump on the back of my hand, quite a bit of pain and swelling. Makes life tricky re. food preparation, personal care etc. Is yours any better now?
Think it might be a rheumatoid nodule? I am new to RA, diagnosed in July, now 4 weeks into Methotrexate treatment 15mg/week. Apparently MTX can cause nodules, I wondered if anyone else has experienced this and is it likely to get any better?
Thanks for any info.
Hi Rolo. I posted a photo of something similar sometime ago . You could search and see if it looks the same . Mine was a synovial cyst. I had it drained but the say it would return but thankfully it hasn’t. It over 3 years now
Hi Rolo85 I’ve got one on each wrist they get bigger and smaller depending on what? Who knows, just been to acupuncture which is supposed to help.diagnosed with possible inflammatory rheumatoid arthritis after a bite/bacterial infection 15months ago, still don’t have a proper diagnosis except it’s inflammation and keeps moving through my body, it’s knees and wrists now… Been staggering on trying all sorts but now on hydroxychloroquine to see if it helps. I had an ultrasound and it’s synovial fluid. Had fluid taken off and all fine for several months. Now they are back, seems to depend on diet (if I have wine they come up instantly which is a bind!) atmospheric pressure so rain etc. colds or allergies. And over use. Been on cortisone and they went down for a bit but the drain followed by injection helped most. It’s a long haul, rest them as much as possible and keep an eye on what might aggravate. Ask for an ultrasound to be sure. Good luck x
