Frustrated with the lack of communication

Is anyone else getting frustrated with the lack of an update? Current shielding advice (for England) is end of June, that’s in two weeks which really isn’t far off at all. I’ve decided to keep my 3 and 1 year old off nursery due to the risks. If shielding is relaxed then I may change that obviously only if I feel comfortable but giving people little to no idea of anything means we can’t plan or at least debate next steps. It’s all gone a bit quiet, I thought we were supposed to be getting an update yesterday?

I think we were told to expect an announcement during the week commencing 15th June so anytime this week.

.....better set up a Twitter account (sorry, couldn't resist)!

The Government did say that an announcement would be made for the Shielded at some point this week I am certain of it

They did. They said an update was coming week commencing 15 June. I bet we won’t hear till Friday!

Well, I don't about anyone else but I really enjoyed today's briefing. It made me have a proper belly laugh and it's been months since that happened.

Watching politicians and journalists trying to say "Dexamethasone" was even more brilliant than watching them try to say "Hydroxychlorquine."

Just saw a headline saying shielding ending at the end of July in the U.K.

happytulip profile image
happytulip in reply to Evaflo10s

Yes I saw that.

I think these headlines are so unhelpful. These issues need to be addressed at a daily briefing with medical input, not a tabloid newspaper.

Yes, I’m hoping it’s true and not more silliness . Shall wait for a proper announcement before I start brushing my hair and cleaning the children :)

Hi,

I’ve just read something just posted on twitter that the govt will cease the shielding programme at the end of July. It was taken from a post on hsj.co.uk. Not sure how reliable the info is!

happytulip profile image
happytulip in reply to Taffsmum

The HSJ is usually an accurate source of info. I just wish this stuff was released properly.

Let's just wait until we know the full details. Of course we will be the last to know I expect!

Yes Ajay but rumours are never helpful in any context of life in my opinion.

People start to worry and get quite upset.

I know this is not what people want to hear...but think we have got to start thinking for ourselves....longterm.

Realistically ...no announcement is going to say “Hey folks it’s all over, you can go go back to living life as you knew it.“

No matter how many statistics are thrown at us....Push come to Shove, we have all got to start organising our lives so that we are as safe & happy as possible .....nobody else.....politician or doctor....can do that for us.

Most of us are probably needing to see our doctors NOW, but rather than stressing big time, we have to come to terms that telephone consults & long hospital waiting lists are going to be with us for a long, long time.....we just have to find a way to deal with the consequences of this terrible disease & thank our lucky stars we are coming through it safely.

It will not help our mental well being stressing & hoping someone else will sort it for us tomorrow ......we all need to make our own plans to live as well as we can.

I couldn't have put it better. Totally agree, only we can decide the way forward for ourselves.

I'm not stressing about it but just wish they would stop the media leaks etc.

My well-being has improved since I've been out for evening walks.

Oddly, I just want a filthy bag of chips with salt and vinegar 😂

My daughter’s nursery policy is they will not take her as I have to shield, if shielding ends as directed by the government they will, it’s then down to me to make a decision if I feel it is safe or not. At the moment with shielding in place I don’t have that choice. I think we all know sadly that we will have to make many decisions on what we are and aren’t comfortable with and take calculated risks until there is treatment and/or a vaccine. Shielding also has an impact on my work as with many others, HR departments want to see official guidance, the decision isn’t mine unfortunately.

AgedCrone profile image

When Shielding dates are finalised it will mean having a discussion with your Rheumatologist & taking his advice.

By then infection rates will have fallen even lower, & I’m sure doctors will be advising all their Shielding patients they can venture out with care.

After all a certain number of the population can’t just give up jobs & stay in their homes forever....some may choose to take sick leave & then claim Government Credits, but that will only cover so much....& probably wouldn’t last long either.

After all most European countries have their children in school & people back at work......so why can’t we?

I expect it could be tomorrow

Just read 31st July shielding programme is ending completely!

I've just read that too..are they expecting the virus to have gone by then I wonder!!!!

Paediatric shielding recommendations were changed last week to a case by case decision for the vast majority of conditions, made by the involved clinicians in conversation with the families, but these changes will only apply from July 1st; my daughter was shielding as a result of cystic fibrosis, and her team have confirmed they’re clinically happy for her to come out of shielding and abide by social distancing instead from that date onwards. I suspect that the announcement due this week will be along similar lines: adults in England will be guided to shield or not shield on a more tailored and individualised basis. Whether or not that will have much impact on those with arthritis in shielding due to immunosuppressant medication remains to be seen. Will make my life very interesting if it doesn’t!

Angjoplin profile image
Angjoplin in reply to

On that basis most folk will get a letter in September telling them to shield until August.. They couldn't manage a mass roll out never mind tailored advice.

AgedCrone profile image
AgedCrone in reply to Angjoplin

Right! I have just this week been told “they” said I should be shielding...I asked to see the notification...it was dated April!

I told them my rheumatologist said Self-Isolate......I pointed out he knows me, prescribes my drugs & knows I am sensible enough to take care.....the c onversation petered out there!

I don’t know(or care) what “they” think!

But as you say....don’t hold your breath for information....you’ll be doing all your Christmas shopping on -line if you wait for that!

We are all awaiting updates but surely if it is extended till end of July some bits will have to be eased we surely cannot be in our protected bubbles one day and then on 1st August everything is fine carry as like everyone else?

I would feel happier with some gradual easing back to normality but I appreciate everyone is different x

Just heard on Radio 4 news that the shielded will receive a letter soon (?) to let them know new recommendations.

It doesn't make any difference to me. Still too many cases and R rate still too high so I won't be going out whatever they say. x

I too expected to hear an update yesterday about shielding as Boris said he hadn’t forgotten us and we’d hear (I thought) the 15th. Will just have to wait and see as many here have said. I personally don’t listen to a word tabloids or journalists say. When they talk after the updates about what’s just been said I sometimes swear they’ve been listening to a different update! I didn’t get my letter until May (!) so not expecting anything anytime soon.

As Aged Crone says perhaps we should start thinking for ourselves. I’ve been out a few times though not daily even though we’re allowed as there’s a lot more people out and about now. I don’t feel comfortable going into shops so will avoid that for the time being. I do want to see my son and my daughter but they’re not in situations where it’s easy to do so. At the moment it’s one day at a time but agree that it feels like we’re the forgotten.

I haven’t heard anything as of yet and yes, they have gone quiet! I hope we something soon so I can forward it to my employer, hopefully I won’t get any backlash if it’s being extended . Right now, I feel doomed if it is extended and doomed if it isn’t....

From parliament today

Hancock was also asked about whether shielding would end soon. (See 8.02am.) He said an announcement was coming very soon and that the government would “very shortly” write to 2.2 million people who are staying in because they are most vulnerable to getting unwell due to the virus.

I'm in Scotland and shielding is now 31at July but that's only if things get easier tomorrow 18 th then we can go for a walk ,it seems to be different rules for England and other countries ,I'm really just going to play it safe as this virus is not going anywhere but that's only my opinion 😕

I am in England an I have a letter from my Rheumatology Consultant - Stay Shielding until 31st July 2020. I went to my surgery this morning for a blood test, she told me that a Community Nurse should have come to my home. Trouble getting past Receptionist on the Telephone; I wore a mask. Take Care.
