The programme gave us a factual time line of events and actions (really non-actions) taken by our government.
Boris was too busy with Brexit to notice. Hancock told us the risk was low.... and so many more.
The UK was in the unique position of being an Island nation, and being at least 2 weeks ahead of Italy... Yet here we are with the highest death toll in Europe. In fact yesterday we had more deaths reported than the total deaths reported in the rest of Europe.
A minimum of 40,000 souls lost to a virus that should have been stopped in its tracks by a hard lockdown and closing of boarders.
Sorry for the rant... but as one of the many shielded, I am angry about the impact this has had on our lives, on my life. Also about the lack of REAL care for the vulnerable in society.

I’m not trying to be offensive but what was the point in this post it’s just so negative. I think retrospectively everyone knows it could have went better and like you I’ve had to shield but I don’t know what your last paragraph is referring to, what else did you want? We’ve been dealt with a worse than normal hand in life where we are considered ‘vulnerable’ and therefore it is your responsibility to shield (which isn’t really asking all that much considering).
I’m not saying I side with the government but I’m just fed up of the constant negativity, not just on here but in general. I originally signed up here not that long ago to read people’s stories about a disease I didn’t know that much about and I’ve definitely found it a positive experience and am looking forward to the future again. I just don’t see the point in these rants about politics etc, yes it can be tied in with the virus which is relevant to everyone on the site but it just doesn’t do anyone any good in my opinion.
I agree. Hindsight is a wonderful thing!! I think the government are stuck between a rock and a hard place. Maybe they made some bad decisions but we have to remember they were making decisions without as much information we have now. They also had the tough job of trying to balance health decisions with economic decisions. My husband is an accountant and as he was working from home at the end of March I witnessed the amount of calls he was taking from clients very worried about their businesses. I saw him almost in tears because he was so worried about how many of his clients would go bust, and the knock on effect that it could mean their business could go bust and he would have to make 250 people redundant. He wasn’t worried about us, as much as he was worried for his staff and their families.
For sure. I’ve spent much of my life being negative and noticed absolutely no benefit from it so it was just an observation.
Totally agree we will be effected for sometime yet. Wider scale is younger people are effected. Schooling , interaction and physical exercise and job opportunities.
For example my 16 year old couldn’t do his GCSES ( worked hard) no prom . Hasn’t seen a friend since lockdown. My son was a competitive swimmer and I say was as the impact of no training and minimal or wrong type of physical activity and limited chance of this changing enough to have a positive impact this year will mean it will be difficult or impossible to reach his goals. 6th form will also not be the experience his was hoping for. A young go getting boy who’s day was crammed full to a boy who is trying so hard to motive himself but each week finds harder. All this effects one young person and with the correct handling and fore sight could have been limited or avoided.
This not a political point but is relevant to me and my family . Young boy can’t go and see his friends as there could be consequences to me.
I get what you’re saying but the points you made were about lockdown which would have happened regardless, just would have started sooner so I don’t think it could have been avoided. Hopefully the job market will have improved by the time your son finishes schooling or university. I was 16 in 2008 so probably have an idea how he feels in relation to an uncertain future. I was originally going to be an electrician because I didn’t like school but ended up going to university instead as I couldn’t get an apprenticeship. I’m sure his swimming won’t be that negatively affected, everyone will be in the same boat. But you’re definitely right about it affecting young people, don’t think this gets talked about enough. I’m sure there are so many people coming out of school/university who now can’t get jobs.
Yes I agree about lockdown happening anyway but ... always a but if preparation was there as soon as NHO sent out their warning and lockdown happened quicker and much more stringent then MAYBE we would have got through this much quicker and we would not still being under such restrictions and will continue to do so . Greece and other countries have managed. I’m not being negative only frustrated as I still feel we are bumbling our way through this with adhoc advice that I feel will slow any form of recovery.
Interesting to read your post. My 16 year old daughter in a similar situation. Cancelled GCSE’s, no post exam celebration. We were taking her to glastonbury to celebrate post exams, now cancelled. She is also a competitive swimmer & club hockey player. Now completely demotivated and struggling to do the basic fitness that she needs to do. She’s on the autistic spectrum too so finds it very hard to think flexibly and respond to different situations. No social contact apart from online for so long. I feel so sorry for her.
