Methotrexate side effects

Hey RA friends

Been on methotrexate injections a couple months 15mg, then 20mg looking to go up next week to 22.5mg.

The last week I’ve had really itchy, puffy swollen eyes. I don’t have an appointment with my GP until next week just wondered if this could be Methotrexate?

It has happened in the past but not as bad and went after a few days. I look awful and they are so itchy. Im taking antihistamine but not much relief.

Any thoughts I would welcome 🙏 💕

Yes it could be or it might be blepharitis an optician could check they would know if it’s this or RA related or a pharmacist my be able to give you something to relieve it till you see your GP

Hello J

Thank you I popped to chemist yesterday reluctant to give any steroid cream as it’s around the eyes.

I don’t feel it is Methotrexate because I feel so well taking it, it has changed my life.

Your are so lovely responding thank you. Opticians for me as well! 👍

Azzure my eyes have been an issue since getting RA and might be just a seperate issue to the MTX. I now use eye drops etc as rheumy consultant says it is SICCA which is part of the Sjorens family with RA.

Hey Deeb thank you for reply and to all of you.

Just been to opticians and my eyes are fine thankfully.

They have confirmed contact dermatitis which is because of something I’ve used so it’s basically a guessing game.

Just threw a mascara out, got some nice eye bath and I’m using a low dose hydrocortisone It feels better already. I know shouldn’t on face but very sparingly and needs must. I didn’t realise as a child because I used to cover myself in it because I had eczema until I was about 14.

Optician did mention because of all the hand gels being used they are chemicals at end of day, and do contain irritants so could bring out this more in people.

It’s just difficult to work out I dyed my hair last week but been doing that for years.

Keep well everyone, and let’s hope this rain is on it’s way out ready for some well needed sunshine ☀️

You really should patch test every time you dye your hair. There is no law that says manufactures have to mark on box if they change the ingredients.I never bothered until my friend ended up with a head & face that looked like a bright red football. It frightened me enough to do the patch test every time! 💇‍♀️💇‍♀️💇‍♀️

Ask your pharmacist...they are well up on known allergic reactions to Mtx..there are so many people taking yet they get asked all sorts of questions.

I have been on Metho for 8years.I know it affects the eyes.

Had a procedure of putting plugs in both eyes, works well.Like you metho works on RA,but has this effect on eyes.I am trying to follow a way of eating to get rid of RA

Unfortunately the case seems to be that the higher the Mtx dose the risk for side effect increases.🙁
