Choice to be made on meds

Just back off my holidays (nightmare but that’s another story) a letter was waiting for me and now I’m confused. At my appointment in July I was told I would be going on etanercept along side sulfasalazine and methotrexate but now I don’t qualify????? But instead I have s choice either have methotrexate injections or start sulfasalazine along side oral methotrexate ( can’t have it with injections) the choice is mine so confused 🤷‍♀️ I’m on 25mg of methotrexate and it’s really not working. I’m due to see clinic nurse in September for my decision I don’t feel I have the knowledge to decide . I will be reviewed in 6 months by Rheumatologist.

Wait until you see your rheumy nurse....there could be all sorts of reasons why your meds have been changed. Anything from a change in your blood test results to your rheumatologist changing his mind how to proceed with your treatment.

It’s September tomorrow .....so you haven’t got long to get the answer.

But don’t worry....your nurse will explain the difference in the drugs you are being offered.

I think the best thing to do would be to work out what are the most important questions you have, and write them down so you don’t forget (i always do if I don’t have a list!).

For example, asking why you can’t have etanercept - if the doc thought you needed it at the last appointment what has changed so you can’t have it now? And why can’t you have sulpha and injectable MTX as it’s a common combination? I was on that for 8 years! And maybe ask are there other options?

I rang the clinic nurse and she just said it’s up to you injections are absorbed better and sulfanazjne makes your wee orange it’s one or the other I have asked her to speak to the rheumatologist to clarify but I don’t hold out much help she doesn’t put herself out for anything

Well, don't give up until you get your questions answered. Be polite but firm, thankyou nurse xxx, but that doesn't answer my question, can you find out please ?

You need information and clearly don't have it just now. So keep asking.

Hi J1707

Not sure why it's either/or with those meds so definitely ask for clarification! I've been on sulfa and injectable MTX for past few months and it's dramatically improved things for me. Totally agree to keep asking. Good luck! 😊
