Poll on rosacea with RA

Staywildmoonchild profile image

Hi all. I hope you are all as well as can be.

So, after years of being led to believe my face rash was just heat and then queeried Lupus, I have had it confirmed its Rosacea.

I have a number of very tender joints and other syptoms of RA (under investigation..... Still)

I would love to set up some kind of poll to see how many RA patients have some degree of Rosacea.

Feel free to comment you gorgeous people.

😊

I thought it was just my wife, plus a whole bunch of past girlfriends, pre-marriage I may add, who reckoned I'm gorgeous, but if you think so as well then I'm good with that! :-)

I've had fairly bad Rosacea for the last couple of years, and RA 16 years. How are you treating yours?

Yes I developed rosacea about 15 years ago, long before my diagnosis of PsA but I was having joint symptoms long before that.

I started with rosacea when on high dose steroids. And it flares up when I increase the dose again, as well as with hot weather.

I was told by the doctor I had rosacea but my rheumy nurse sent me to a specialist a year later to be told it was definitely eczema and he said it was quite common side effect of the rituximab and other biologics. the medication he gave me was clobetasone blutyrate for my face and betnovte for my scalp and if it didn't work to go back and he would give me something stronger. It does calm it down and I can live with that for now.

Sunny, I've never been entirely happy with my diagnosis. I definitely have rosacea, but I also get spots and pustules on my scalp and torso, especially my back. I never had a definitive answer off dermatologists what the condition was/is and was discharged when I refused to take long term antibiotics as there was nothing more they could do for me. My rosacea is relatively calm at the mo but the spots over my back are quite troublesome and rarely calm down.

Glad you seem to have found out what your problem is.

I did just before I was diagnosed for about a year. Was given a cream that cleared it up and thankfully, no sign since. Strange, never connected it to R.A. before.

As I recall my skin problems started not long after my RA became uncontrolled, my rosacea a bit later. No medical professionals have ever told me that it's linked to RA, but I wouldn't be a bit surprised if my rosacea and other skin issues are something to do with having a compromised immune system.

It’s interesting isn’t it. I’ve never had spots or any skin conditions on my face ever. The rosacea came as a surprise, but kinda makes sense now

I was diagnosed with Rosacea about 18 months ago, touch wood it's quite manageable at the moment. At first I had the antibiotic cream to use on my face, which cleared up the spots and pustules. I had to stop using my usual face creams, make up etc. It has taken me a lot of trial and error to find things that I can use. And money I should add.

Hot spicy food can cause it to flare so avoid as much as possible. I also use factor 50 suncream on my face and avoid direct sun as much as possible.

Diagnosed with rosacea in 1994. It was mild ie not all over my face. After a few years it disappeared.

But it returned in Dec 2017, two years after diagnosis of RA.

This was the worst it had ever been, pustules and spots, redness, dry patchy skin.

Rosex topical treatment did not help.

But advice from lots of people here did!

It cleared up after alternating the following (depending on time):

Twice a day:

apply apple cider vinegar (1 part vinegar to 1 part water I think it was), leave on affected area for 20 minutes. Wash off with a mild soap you know your skin will tolerate eg organic brands.

Lastly, apply an oil eg coconut oil which has anti bacterial properties. Some people find it blocks pores but I don’t.

OR twice a day wash face with 10% sulphur soap then apply oil eg organic rose hip oil. Counteracts the rotten egg smell too!

Now, it rarely shows. But I still use treatment once most days.

i recently developed rosacea but still in the diagnosis period. why the question? is it due to seeing if the RA treatment is causing it or is RA causing it, just curious to why the question was put out
