Insomnia with methotrexate

Hi, Lately I’ve been having extreme insomnia where I’ll lie awake all night tossing, reading, and am only able to fall asleep late in the morning like at 4 and 5 mostly. I’ve been getting 2-3 hours of sleep a night and I feel exhausted all day. This became a lot worse when I began my dose of methotrexate again. What can I do to counter these effects and does anyone know if methotrexate worsens insomnia?

I’m sorry you’re struggling with insomnia, it’s the worst. :( What time of day do you take the MTX? I found humira gave me insomnia if I injected at night, so I switched to first thing in the morning and it improved hugely. Are you on anything else that could be contributing to the insomnia?

I’m on so much which probably could be suspect! Let’s c: Actemra, nabumetone, amitriptyline, tropiramate, and several steroid eye drops. I usually take methotrexate at night, which may be the cause...

Yes, thank you... hearing other people have felt like this too is idk, validating?

Similar, slept much better since off MTX ( well apart from last night but waffled on enough about that already😊). I’m still not sure whether drugs or disease: at least you’ve got someone to talk to in early hours on here - sleeplessness seems issue for loads 😉

As you're taking your MTX at night it could be related to your insomnia I suppose. I'd experiment with the time of day you take it. You don't say whether it's tablets or injections but I inject MTX in the morning. If it's tablets, again you could try mornings or even as I did, throughout the day with meals. If there's no improvement try the same with your other meds, except the tropiramate of course & your nabumetone if you take that in the evening.

Just wondering, when do you take your amitriptyline? I also take it, 25mg in the morning & 50mg in the evening, the latter helps me sleep, wondering if it could you too.

If none of above help maybe look at what you're doing before you go to bed. Such as are you affected by caffeine, not relaxing generally & other common causes of insomnia.

I hope you get to the bottom of it, I've been there & it's rubbish.

I used to take mine just before bed and always struggled with sleep for a few hours. Tried switching to mornings but felt rubbish all day. Now take at about 6pm and am ready for sleep about 10, then crash til morning. Not so bad the next day either.
