Not sure what meds are right for a women of child bearing age?:)

Hi all -

I was recently diagnosed, have been on steroids to help decrease the inflammation, and now need to figure out my future drug of choice.

I am 35. While I am not planning on having children in the next year, I do want to ensure that the drugs I take are the right ones / least impact on pregnancy etc.

Any advice?:)

Thanks!

Hi Natef

You need to speak to your rheumatologist about this as we cannot give you this kind of advice. We are not qualified.

I was 25 when I was diagnosed, I went on methotrexate, hydroxychloroquine after I failed on sulphasalazine. I stopped the methotrexate ( mtx) for 6 months before trying to conceive and got pregnant 3 months later. So what drug you take now may not necesarrily affect a pregnancy but there are obviously drugs you must not get pregnant on, mtx being one of them.

There may be info on the Nras website.

Hi when I was diagnosed 3 years ago I was newly married and in my early thirties. I was given a steroid injection to reduce inflammation and then put on sulfasalazine as this is suitable to take whilst pregnant. Luckily my RA is quite mild compared to a lot of people and the sulfasalazine controlled it for me. I had a gorgeous and healthy little boy 12 weeks ago and took the sulfasalazine throughout. I did cut down my dose whilst pregnant due to suffering hyperemesis gravidarum and being unable to keep hardly anything down. Initially I also used naproxen when I needed it but stopped this when ttc and pregnant.

I suggest you speak to your rheumatologist and discuss the options with them.
