Increase sulfasalazine - nausea and headaches?

Morning peeps-

Last week my sulfasalazine was increased from 2 twice a day to 3 twice a day. Since then, I've felt awful: nauseous and a migraine type of headache. I'm thinking I'll drop back to 2 twice a day...any suggestions?

Sorry you've had this side effect from the Sulphasalazine increase. When I went up to that dose I had nausea too and headaches, but not migraine. I dropped back down to 2 twice a day and returned to my GP. He told me to go back up to 3 twice a day and try to stick it out.

It did get better over the next couple of weeks. So maybe just try it for a bit longer? Either way I'd advise you see or ring your GP or Rheumatology nurse.

I did that Ally- my gp doesn't really have an opinion! My rheumy says go to my gp! I have only taken 2 this morning and have no headache or nausea...have you ever tried 2 - 3 times a day? The trouble is that I had to go home from work feeling so bad. I teach and as such have to be on top of my game at all times.

Hi Moomin, yes I did take 2 three times a day, when I went back on them. That may have been why it was easier second time around. I'd forgotten that!

Give it a try, it's the same dosage after all. Not good that your rheumatologist and GP are passing the buck to each other! ☹

I would say the same ask your rheum Nurse for advice. May settle but not pleasant in the mean time. I take 3 a day always make sure I take it after food. Hope it settles.

Yes 3 in a morning and 3 in an evening.x

Hi moonin I was also on Sulf. And I got to take 3 a day I couldn't take it any more I was so sick . My Dr told me it won't get any better even if I go back to two a day, so I stop taking them. Hope that going back to 2 works for you. 😜
