By coincidence, last year we adopted a ground hornbill at a local animal rescue ... Doris. Very long lived and has the most incredible eyelashes!

Lovely Em, no need for mascara then! Check though if your adopted hornbill is like dtech's pic, Doris may be a Boris. The female has a patch of bluey-purple under the bill as well as the red.

Sadly, the rescue centre lost Doris last December. She was 65. I don't know why, but I was amazed at how affectionate she was. Maybe it was the contrast between the hard horny bill and her gentleness. I'd love to see a wild one - what a privilege!
