Ankle replacement

I had an ankle replacement 17 years ago, and up until 2 years ago it was great. In the last two years it has become more and more painful. Seen the consultant who feels it has dropped as far as it is going to, but does not want to do anything. Has anyone any experience of replacing an existing ankle replacement or fusing the joint. The pain continues to get worse and mobility difficult.
