taken extra dose mtx: I take 15mg mtx on Thursday... - NRAS
taken extra dose mtx
Hi, when I did this I went to A&E and they did a blood test just to make sure all was ok. I phoned NHS Direct first and wasted 2hrs for them to tell me to go to A&E which is what I'd already guessed. x
I take 15mg of Mtx weekly and stupidly took 9 tablets in error. Was terrified. As was in Greece on holiday and had he usual holiday cocktails and ouzo. Googled overdose and it calmed me down as mainly if given IV the danger is. Made sure I had my bloods checked when I came home and TG all ok. Will never accept them looses in a bottle again as easier to count if you have to pop them out. Think higher doses are taken orally for other diseases. But would ring OOH doctors and ask for advice.
You may feel more groggy but I would certainly take Paula's lead & pop down to A&E with your bottle/ packet of MTX & see what they have to say. Did you check your patient info leaflet to see if there's any advice listed for double-dosing in the same week?
Just read the leaflet that comes with MTX and it says that if you take a double dose you should speak to a doctor or go to casualty, as it could be toxic to your system. Best to get it checked out.

Thanks for response...called A&E they told me to call 111 who took lots of information then put me through to NHS emergency doctor... very efficient service I must say... told to monitor re 'dark urine/tummy pain/pale stools any feelings of unwell. Not to take next weeks dose of methotrexate and to make contact with own GP on Monday. Gosh such a stupid thing to do, guess im very lucky. Usually I take my folic acid today too(2 days after my 15mg mtx on Thursday)..have not took it today now will wait until Monday. What an amazing service NHS direct just had another call back from them to check I was ok.... WOW
So glad you called 111, (NHS Direct here in Wales). They are very good and it was good that they called you back. Hope you get through this without any after effects. I always use a daily tablet box with 4 compartments so I know when and what I have taken. I do know that with this and many other conditions we can get confused and muddled with all the meds.
Hope you have a good out come.

Thanks Jan..... that's a good idea.. I had been given anti reflux tablets by my gp day before to take early morning and evening...hence woke early, with this on my mind(not sure if im losing it) reached for my tablets next to bed and actually counted out the methotrexate tablets and as soon as I took a swallow of water to wash em down realised.... still feeling ok though fingers crossed.
I'm glad you sought medical advice and that they've advised you on how to monitor you. Just to reassure you, that they give MTX to cancer patients in quite high doses, so while it can be unpleasant, hopefully it won't be too bad for you.
Don't feel silly though, it happens. x
Oh gosh Suzy. I would have been in a panic too. I bet your tummy was wondering what the heck is she giving me this again for? Hope all's well. Angela x
Thanks for all your responses, well Monday morning and nothing happened after extra dose of methotrexate... supposed to have flu jab today but decided to leave it for a while. Been very very tired all weekend so not sure if that's a side effect, but then im usually tired anyway lol
Beginning to wonder if taking mtx is the right thing to be doing.. not exactly out of pain, hands still stiff and hurt majority of time and now because of reflux told to stop Ibruprofen. Plus im always low... any suggestions
I would def take a trip to A&E Metx can be toxic, but I am sure you will be fine.
Do have sore throat and dry cough suddenly appeared and having looked at more posts concerned re dry cough. Due a telephone call from GP this afternoon so will mention to him, plus going to call rheumy nurse to update.
