I love my heated back and neck pad, but then I have ankylosing spondylitis which gets me in the back mostly anyway. If the heat pad you are buying doesn't have an automatic cut off after about 15 minutes, just make sure you do only leave it going for about 15 minutes at a time. It can be incredibly easy to damage your skin from too much heat otherwise, and its not easy to see yourself what is happening on your back.
