How long does it take to receive blood results nhs???
Hi dolly
My routine test results are usually in the next day,the gp checks any action needed and I usually collect the results......I like my own copies of test results
Specialised tests such as anti cpp may take a little longer I'm not sure.
Have you phoned your gp to see if they are back? X
I'd do as Beaches suggest & give your GP surgery a quick ring to see if they're in. It does depend where it's sent for analysis & how busy they are but mine are usually back within the week.
When they were taken were you not told when to ring to see if they were back?
If there's any problem detected in your blood tests you should be contacted (maybe by phone or post). If everything is as expected it's less likely that you'll be contacted, but you can phone for results when you will be told something like, the result was normal, or no further action required, or please make an appointment. If you want to know the specific result you might need to make an appointment with the GP. All that depends on how your surgery organises itself.
The bottom line is - no news is usually good news!
Hi Dolly,
I worked in a GP practice for several years. It really depends on the blood tests taken. Some tests if they are relating to hormone levels can take up to a week to come back and others such as FBC ( full blood count ) can be back the next day. Surgeries operate differently , in the one I worked at we would always contact a patient either by letter or phone if they needed following up. As a fail safe though we would always tell the patient they needed to contact the surgery themselves for the results. I would definitely give them a call.
Regards
Sally

10 days at our surgery and you call them xxxx
I rang and gp had nothing. I rang rhumy and receptionist said the rhumy doc will read results and wrote to doc....Wtf I wanna know my results ASAP as I need treatment. Currently only on diclofenac and it doesn't do alot
I guess it's another case of Rheumy departments being overrun & understaffed. I'm afraid it'll be a case of waiting though it shouldn't be too long now. Did your surgery offer to ring you when your GP is advised? Failing that, see if your GP will prescribe you something alongside the diclofenac now you've had your bloods taken & explain calmly but firmly just how concerned you are about receiving treatment. But be prepared, it could be some time as he considers you inconclusive at present so if these bloods show the same he may want to do more tests to give a definitive diagnosis. I know it's frustrating at the moment, it's the not knowing, but you'll get there.
It varies from next day to several weeks depending on the test, and whether your local laboratory does it or it needs to be sent away. I usually phone my doctors surgery and ask if the results are back.
At my surgery it is two weeks
If your system is anything like at my surgery, my GP can see any laboratory results on the computer.
What may be more difficult is if some of them need specialist interpretation - then you just have to wait for the consultant to look at them and come to a decision.
The blood results can be clear-cut - that's easy - start on DMARDs. Or not clear cut- that's difficult because it may mean putting all the evidence together and taking a decision. That decision may be to wait until things are clearer, unfortunately.
they said to me that I would only be contacted if there were any concerns , otherwise no news is good news. they usually are done within 24hrs here but will take longer to reach the GP. x
Hi Dolly, these days the results are sent electronically direct to your surgery, often later of the day you have you test but certainly by the following day (although in some cases it can take longer for some tests - but that is quite rare). Each surgery works differently - some will have a duty GP each day whose job it is to review the results and decide what action needs to be taken, others will assign the results back to the clinician who requested the test. Either way, I would expect they would have received and reviewed the results by now. Usual policy is they only contact you if they need to repeat test or change your treatment/medication in some way. I'd suggest you give your surgery a ring to check if they've got the results back. The receptionist will be able to tell you what the levels are and arrange an appointment if you want to discuss them with your GP. Having said that, the surgery I worked in until recently was so busy it sometimes took us a few days to call patients if they needed to be routinely seen or re-tested.
Anyone help I'm really worried had some bloods taken they have come back but doctor's receptionists said cholesterol and full blood count was fine but others ( thyroid, hba1c, u&e, lft, and bone profile as not been marked off does this mean there's something wrong or the doctor as just not seen them really worried as suffer panic and anxiety and wondering why some have been seen but not others thank you in advance x
Can take up to 2 weeks if it's been done at the hospital. And 1 week through your gp.Hope you hear soon,it as scary when your left waiting.
Well it is coming up for three weeks since I had blood tests taken. I started ringing surgery this week, two days before Christmas, only to be told three times they are in with the doctor to look at. Tomorrow is last day before Christmas and if the doctor has to change my medication I wonder when I will get prescription !!!!!!! Probably after Christmas now. Has anyone else had this trouble.
