hi i am new to this but would like to see if anyone ... - NRAS
hi i am new to this but would like to see if anyone on here suffers from painful ribs due to their RA i was diagnosed with RA 7 months ago
I have had bouts of Costochondritis in the past, which is inflammation round the ribs. Painful! But does go away when inflammation is better controlled. Do make sure you tell your rheumy.
I've had this too, awful at the time and feel as though I can't take deep breaths. It does always stop after a while and doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to it. Clemmie
Yes, it flared again recently. Very painful and limiting when it's active. It calmed down over the last few days, but had a few weeks when lying down was too painful, then started being able to lie down for increasing amounts of time and now can lie down for up to 6 hours so I get chance of a bit of decent sleep.
Hi yeah, I have bouts of costochondritis for years, had the diagnosis only after being sent for an ultrasound after other explorations, and practically hitting the roof when pressed hard on the rib area. The first bout was extremely painful but does tend to ease away and sometimes for longer periods than the joint pains now. Also take sulfasalazine, 6 per day, find the regular cortisone jabs are very beneficial. Hope you get some relief with the rib pain!
Do you take any anti inflammatory drugs? If not Maybe ask your RA Nurse for some. Also ask if it would help to increase the sulfasalazine. Personally and everyone is different with RA I suffer with pain in my ribs but only on the left side. Hope you feel better soon
Hello, sorry for the late reply. Yes, I have lots of pain in the ribs due to costochondritis (mainly in the chest area). But I also had two 'tears' in the 10th rib on the left hand side which was absolute agony and was only discovered after an ultrasound. Several doctors had dismissed my concerns until eventually I was offered an x-ray which was inconclusive and two ultrasounds which revealed the two small fractures in the 10th rib on left hand side. (The GP ordered the first one and the rheumy ordered a specialist to do the second one). Mentioning this in case it's helpful and definitely keep going til you find out if it's anything else other than costochondritis.
