I had microfracture surgery on my left knee but it was about a year before I developed what was eventually diagnosed as RA and although it took ages, a year or so fo my knee to feel okay again, the RA did not cause a flare of any pain. In fact the biggest issue I can see with joint surgery if you're on tretament for RA is the risk of post-operative infection. You would have to stop anti-TNF and methotrexate, and steroids prior to surgery so you might have to accept a flare if surgery is essential.

I suffered a life-threatening fractured skull in bicycle race [you can see that my anti-TF is hugely effective in that I was still able to get extremely fit despite my RA,] but I had a shunt implanted in my head that became infected and had to undergo replacement surgery , all largely because the methotrexate I was on at that time wasn't stopped soon enough and my immunity was compromised as a result. Not much fun! So yes, infection is a real risk.

HTH.
