Yes, I applied for DLA and gave up work a few years ago.

You need to do a lot of research, talk to your employer, the Trade Union if you have one, and HR. Also go to CAB and get advice from them. You will need a lot of supporting evidence.

Can you get ill-health retirement?

It won't be easy and many people are turned down on their first application.

There is a lot of help out there. Good luck!

Hello

Many disabled have now been turned onto PIP,

hi Lacey green , I would get the forms ASAP , they are very long , and need a lot of info . the main thing is explaining how your RA effects your every day life ie your mobility , how far you can manage to walk without pain and please list all the difficulties you have . And the care part What you can and can't do . You will need medical backup , they contacted my gp and my consultant for reports on my mobility medication etc and my DAS Score . I've had to give up my lovely job after 16 yrs working there . Just couldn't physically do it anymore . I've had 6 yrs of this terrible condition and was only diagnosed 15 months ago being seron neg was the one thing that made it so hard to diagnose . Some days I can barely stand . Other times walking is extremely painful and slow , sometimes not quite so bad . the thing with RA is that it's so good and bad days . I would go for it , I did it was a long process but I did get it eventually .

I sometimes wonder if it is worth trying again, I was turned down a couple of years ago and was so upset I didn't try again, I put everything I had into applying and was turned down due to what my doctor and consultant wrote in their letters! How can you appeal against that?

Yes it is possible. Just be aware that both PIP and DLA are for long term and permanent disability - if there is any suggestion that your condition (and disability levels) will improve substantially once treatment kicks in properly then you may have difficulty proving eligibility. Likewise if your condition flares and subsides, and isn't active all the time.

Having said that, its well worth applying and seeing if you are eligible. Don't even think about filling in the form yourself if you have never done one of these before. It is just so easy to use the wrong words and have them misinterpreted by the decision maker. Best bet is to make an appointment with the Disability advisor at your local CAB. They have an enormous lot of experience in these forms, as well as having access to decision maker guides, so know what kind of information they are looking for. Its almost more a case of knowing what NOT to write than what you actually do write. Also, if you are turned down and CAB have helped you, it makes it easier for them to help you with an appeal.

Great advice given so far I think. I got DLA and ill health retirement. It took a lot of support letters from my Rheumy consultant and gp. Also included lots of meetings for the ill health retirement withy manager, personell , me and my union rep.

DLA pip is for people with disability that will last the next six months I think so you need gp support and Rheumy support too. CAB are amazing, the forms are long and the questions are complicated so I would fill them out with someone eg CAB with disability issues experience. But it's worth it after you get it, but very stressful I felt when going through it. However I just completed my application as it ran out after two years and got a yes only one week later, I was so pleased and amazed . Good luck and go for it, it's there to help those with disability or mobility issues , don't be put off but do get help I think xx A
